I just got my car, is this a part that is a problem?

The '41 hood lip in most any kind of condition is hard to find. Due to the diecast material they deteriorate and also break.     Harry

Great. It is always a good feeling to find those much needed elusive parts.   Harry

Mark, now that you have found one, you need to be very, very careful with it, especially if it is "done." The hoods will sometimes take a warp and when you settle the hood ready to close it, the pressure on it will snap one of the ends of the hood lip. In other words, don't just install it and close the hood and push the lady down.

I'm sure some other '41 experts will chime in and give you further advice on how to install it and keep it safe for you. And I will pass along my tried and true caution...  When adjusting the tension rod of the closure mechanism, and you think the rod needs just one more tiny, tiny adjustment to make the lady drop down easier. NEVER, NEVER leave the cotter key out of the rod that "one last time." If it bounces out, it locks the hood shut. And you will weep bitter tears before you get the hood open again.

Thanks for the advice   the one I found needs a rechrome but its not bad.  the one on my car has one end off of it. I'm sure it happened from what you have told me about.

Thanks

A couple other areas about this molding that I learned 'by experience'. If your new find is original, it will still have a 'peak' in the center. Be sure to stress with the plater you chose to be sure to keep this detail in its original form. Many if not most of the 41 lip moldings out there have this ground down by players who do not understand it is correct to be there. If your part is missing this peak, decide how important original accuracy is before moving forward.

Second is to understand how the plater plans to deal with the inevitable pits in 74 year old pot metal. Again, many/most fill the defects by repeated heavy copper plating. Thus will leave the back side of the molding - the part that fits up to the painted hood - greatly distorted and no longer fitting right. The excess copper must be ground off before the nickel & chrome layers are plated. Suggest you have them send the part back to you after the copper layer(s) and grind excess material away to properly fit the part to your painted hood. Then you can send it back for a flash layer of copper and the nickel/chrome.

Hope this helps
