Looking for a rear sump oil pan for a 472 big block. Also needed would be the oil pump and pick up tube.

Larry,
Hi. Couple on eBay right now. Oil pump can be purchased anywhere ( Rock Auto, Napa, etc.). Hope this helps!

Is this engine going into a 68-81(85) Cadillac or something else?  And if Cadillac is it an Eldorado?

Basically the 472-500-425-368 engine family had 3 oil pans and 2 oil pumps.   There was the 'front sump' that was used on the RWD cars 68-76.  The 'mid sump' which was almost like a typical GM pan that was used on the 77-81(85) RWD cars.   I keep saying (85) because 82-85 the 368 was available in the limo and commercial chassis.   The 'rear sump' was used in the 68-81 Eldorado.  The sump area is further back and hangs down further than a typical GM pan and there is a hump just in front of the main sump that was for the Eldorado's right drive shaft.   Each pan has its own pickup tube.   The 68-69's were smaller diameter than the newer blocks.

Some swaps work with the mid sump.  Many swaps work best with the Eldorado pan but sometimes the depth causes issues.  The Eldo pan is the most expensive because it was less common and its by far the most difficult one to remove.  Engine and transmission have to be separated to remove the pan so there is a lot of labor even at the junkyard / scrap level.

Oil pumps are external bolted to the front of the block sorta like the Buicks.   68-76 the filter kinda angles away from the crank pulley.  The 77-81 angles in to the crank pulley and usually used a smaller diameter filter but the nipples and gasket diameters were the same so depending on what pulley you have and other clearance issues there are several filters to choose from.    A warning about the pumps is for a long time only Melling made them and many of them had a defect where a valve would stick and leave you with no oil pressure.   I'm not sure if there are others now or if the problem has been solved.    MTS (500cid.com) inspects and repairs the pumps as needed before they ship em.   They also have a lot of other new and used goodies for these engines and are good people making parts to keep these engines going.
