I presume you mean the Mercury switch? They are usually never any good after all these years, none of mine were. There has been a discussion about these recently on the forum stating that there are many cheap Mercury switches available on ebay that can easily be adapted.

I would think it is a spring loaded plunger switch, at least that is what I have for my 1942. I recently worked the switch loose with Pb Blaster  and lubricated it with silicone and tested it and it is working just fine. The old wire insulation was falling apart so I cleaned them up and stripped them and put on a double layer of heat shrink insulation.  Easier than looking for new switch and harness.

Very interesting Steve.  1942 was a big year for Cadillac as it was 40th anniversary and many changes were made. Not much mechanically but as I am finding a lot of 1942 only stuff. Even the 1946 has so many changes from 1942.  I am sure the evolution would have been more gradual if not for the war. My parts car was a 1942 series 67  blackout model. Too bad it was too rusted out to be worth saving.

Hi guys On my '47 sedan I had both mercury switches (trunk and glove) neither worked.I tried to get them to work, cleaned ends.I broke one open to see the mercury it  seemed fine.Do you have any idea what makes them fail. There can not be many reasons why.The only thing I can think of is the inside cap on the glass must build up a film that is nonconductive, any thoughts. I have replaced the glove box with a normally open push button switch and the trunk with a toggle switch.

I think thats all it can be Marty as there was nothing wrong with the Mercury in mine but as I said, there seems to be plenty on ebay that can easily be adapted.

Could someone please clarify where & how the mercury switch for the glove box is mounted?  It was long gone on my 41, but I will be replacing the harness in the next few days and would like to make all correct again.

Thanks!

Its behind the dash attached to the left glove box bracket and so tips when the door is opened.
