Title: St. Claire Cadillac in San Jose, Ca. closes.
Post by: Bob Hoffmann CLC#96 on January 26, 2018, 03:54:11 PM
Guys,
A sad day. In business more then 80 years. A real surprise to everyone. I bought both a new car & a used one there. I also got some NOS & an old MPL list from them many years ago. So, here's San Jose/Santa Clara with NO Cadillac dealership.

Bob,
That is a sad day, is there a nearby Cadillac dealership or does Silicone Valley not appreciate the "Standard of the World" and would rather be driving Teslas or Priuses?

These electric car lovers, and even Cadillac Electric car lovers will not be pleased with what is happening in the future.

The Government here in Australia is formulating a way of collecting a Road Tax from the owners of electric vehicles similar to that tax which is collected on Petrol and Diesel sales.

Bruce-

The same thing is happening here; fuel tax revenues declining, so you know something else will go up to make up for it.

I predict electronic toll roads.  All vehicles will have a transponder like easy pass, they will get the bill in the mail, like Denver’s I-25 express lanes https://www.codot.gov/projects/archived-project-sites/i-25-hov-express-lanes
(https://www.codot.gov/projects/archived-project-sites/i-25-hov-express-lanes)Such a system can have a variety of rates.  Higher rates for high traffic routes during rush hour, lower rates for Hov lanes.  High rates for heavy trucks during rush hour and low rates midnight to 5 AM.  That could do wonders for traffic by shifting cargo traffic to the night shift.
With this system would replace gasoline taxes.

In my state, Georgia, electric cars pay a special road tax--I think it's $200--to make up for the state's loss in fuel tax.

How?   The mention of Silicone Valley, and the closing of the dealership which I took was near Silicone Valley.   Heck, everything is near Silicone Valley.   Just hit a computer button, and you are there.

It’s Silicon Valley, BTW.  Silicone Valleys are something you’d see in an LA plastic surgeon’s office!

If Bruce says it's ok, it's ok!

Cadillac will come out with an all electric car at some point, it's just a matter of time.

Road taxes will have to be paid.

And by the way, toll roads are NO GOOD.  HIGHEST TAXES per mile.  It's ridiculous.  Put a pen to it.  We're being sold a bill of goods with toll roads.

It doesn’t have to be.
The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the city and or state rigs the traffic lights so we burn more of the taxed gas.  At least with a toll road you pay for the distance you travel vice the gas you burn while stuck in traffic.

State gas tax in Texas is $0.20 per gallon, federal tax is $0.184 per gallon, that's $0.384 per gallon.

I sometimes have to drive a 25 mile stretch of toll road due to accidents on the "free" roads.  Cost is about $4.00.  That's $0.16 per mile.

On the "free" roads, if the car gets 25 miles per gallon, the "tax" cost is $0.384, which is $0.01536 per mile.

So on the "free" roads,  I pay about a penny & a half per mile, on the toll roads I pay seventeen and a half cents per mile.

Our local and state governments are failing us and we're letting it happen.

Driving the Cadillac, the cost per mile would be about 3 times as much...
