Is this space just open between the body & the rear bumper? 1970 Deville

Doing a little work on the weather stripping, a couple of questions.

When the trunk is open, there's a gap between the body & rear bumper.  Is there any baffle or filler that bridges that gap?  Or is that the way it is?

Also, when replacing the trunk weather stripping, does the joint go by the latch (I think it does) or does it go up by the back window?

Pics of the gap attached.

What you see is what you get! There is no material, flexible or otherwise, that goes between the rear bulkhead and the bumper. You’re not missing anything. My ‘67 has a piece of glossy rubber that fits there, but they cheaped out by 1970. My low mileage 1970 Coupe looks just like yours.

Weatherstrip joint is at the latch.

They must have deleted the mounting holes for the little tabs that would hold the masticated rubber flashing in place. I guess this is another reason to get a 1969 instead of a 70. Or better yet, a 1968!  :D

The seam in the weatherstripping should always go at the bottom near the latch.

The Eldorado has a large filler in that area, the Deville's do not.
