It takes a lot of money to restore one of these but any 53 Eldorado that's at least this solid NEEDS to be restored.  If the main rust damage is just the floors and the rest of the body is not paper thin and the frame isn't ready to snap in half it's a viable project.  Even if the car was free you would have to spend more than you can buy a nice one for to restore it. Even with that being the case, some people are willing to take this on and don't care if they are "upside down" financially when they are done.

I am familiar with three very nice examples of 53 Eldo's that were purchased within the past few years.  Very nicely restored drivers from $135,000 to $185,000.  So i'd say the market price is just that, based on how nice the car is and if it's a dealer, private sale, or auction company.

I have bought project cars over the years and did a full body off restoration when I was in my 30's.  Between scavenging for parts and saving up my nickels it took 15 years to finish but at that time that's what the hobby was for me.  I did the mechanical work myself and had the paint and interior done professionally and that car needed a lot of metal fab and bodywork.

Yes, the asking price is steep but I guess when the car finds a new home it will happen when both parties are happy with the price.  Maybe the guy thinks a Saudi oil sheik will buy it for the asking price.  I'd ask myself if I found this car and drug it out of a barn how much would I try to get before slamming the seller or calling names.

Maybe one of the many Swedish Cadillac enthusiasts with mad welding and bodywork skills will buy it and get it done.  It would be nice to see it back on the road.

Brian,
I would think they would purchase one fully restored. Instant Gratification. I think this car is would be perfect for someone with really deep pockets and the need to challenge themselves. Of course it can be done, but how much of a chunk out of your life are you willing to write off with something this far gone? I would be nuts enough to take this on, but my bank account says otherwise  ::)......

Hmm, maybe. When I was there I didn't see any classic Cadillac's but wouldn't surprise me to hear that they exist.

For a hundred grand, I would want a detailed inventory of all of the pieces of unobtanium.

If they have 2 other 53 Eldos, how do you know they didn't cannibalize a few extremely rare pieces?

The Saudi's have car collections that would blow your mind.

Wrench also makes a good point.  Probably correct.

I'm sure the prospective buyer for one of these knows what he's doing.

I had a friend who pulled one of these out of a junkyard to restore. The only part that he had concern about was getting a new windshield as his first calls to PPG were not profitable, and he'd already started on the restoration. Finally he located a new one. In fact, I believe he had his choice between 100% clear and one with the sun block band. You can see the results in the first edition of "Cadillac, The Complete History." He put a nice set of chrome sabres on it rather than chrome the wires. I remember coming home from an IN CLC meeting in the rain and getting rain on my face through the gaps in the top and body. (I was in the LR seat.) I remember that Lex used lead to repair the body, so he did it right.

The one for $135,00 was a great deal that I will leave anonymous because he doesn't want people knowing what he paid for the car.  Beautiful driver with just a bit of patina.

So tell me, your real name is Jack M. Ehoff?

No, that is a car purchased this year for $135,000.  Running, driving 53 Eldo with a beautiful original interior.  I also did an inspection and appraisal on a 53 Eldo that ended up in California.  That was in totally restored condition but driven and shown for a few years.  That was $185,000.  So those are two cars I have personally seen and know about.  So if you pay $100,000 for one that needs a total restoration you will have to wait for the next up market to get your $350,000 back when all is said and done.

A very nice 1953 Eldorado from the estate of Niel DeAtley sold last month at Barrett Jackson Scottsdale for $181,500.00 including the buyers premium. Niels estate would have realized about $145,500.00 net after commission and entrance fee.

You couldn't begin to restore the "project" car we are discussing here for the extra $82,000.00 that the DeAtley car realized at the Scottsdale auction.

Someone got a good deal purchasing that auction car.

Some guys like a challenge.
If all of the Eldo goodies are all there and the frame isn't too bad the car can and should be restored.

So either they seller will eventually lower the price or someone will deep pockets will buy it and restore it.

It's not going to languish as it is with nothing happening to it.

Can't fault the seller for going for big bucks to test the waters. Who knows maybe it's already sold.

Eric DeVirgilis CLC# 8621

When it comes to certain rare & high dollar cars, some people are simply not concerned about the economic benefits of "buying done" vs restoring, because they enjoy the satisfaction of feeling "connected" with the car, reflecting their own vision, personalization or whatever.

It is simply a choice some people are willing (and are able to afford) to make. If it helps to support the hobby and the economy, that's a good thing which is fine by me. :)

$69,800 for the '59 EBZ (supposedly sold) - if it's any point of reference on the '53...

90 Bids...WOW!  A lot of people after that car or lots of Sham bidding. At least it's been kept indoors, out of the elements at some point. This car still seems like a better deal than the '53. $30K difference is a nice head start towards your restoration....
