Working on a 1965 Cadillac SDV with 127k miles (long time owner - more than 20 years), and he wants to take it to 200k miles.

It needs suspension work, steering work, timing chain, and other work yet to be discovered when it arrives at my garage to start work Monday after work.

I know for sure it needs rear suspension bushings (all 8), and a timing chain.  I would like to have those parts available (order today).  What is best source?  Interested in quality more than price, but obviously do not want to over pay either.

Thanks,

Scot

For the timing chain, I ordered Cloyes, but there was no kit, so I had to order separately from RockAuto.  CLOYES   C499,   CLOYES   S404T, CLOYES   S365

Scott,
Rear bushings are the same 65-76 so there should be something from say Rock Auto or other major supplier.

Might be in trouble.  The part numbers listed for a timing chain are for a 1966, and the part numbers for a 1965 are different.  Difference appears to be the width of the chain (9 plate for 1965, and 7 plate for 1966).  The car has not been started.  Do I need to switch to a 1965 chain, or will a 1966 work?  Does the 1965 429 require a stronger chain than the 1966?  You would think it would be fine, but like to be sure.

Looks like in the parts manual they are different too, so may be good to swap even if slightly different.  Checked Cloyes site, and good catch, they are different part numbers...you wouldn't think being both 429s.  I got above for my '66, but also need to do for my '65...good that you caught they are different!

Chuck,

The 65 chain is wider 4 and 5 links interlocked, and the 66 chain is narrower 3 and 4 links interlocked.  Otherwise identical.  I bought the part number here and installed it, engine is all back together, but not started.  I have to decide if I tear it down again and install the 65 chain.  It should work because cam sprocket is screwed down, just need to be sure drive sprocket on crank cannot walk.  Thoughts?

Ahh, OK got it.  Maybe someone can chime in who has replaced on 429s and can confirm if issue.  Maybe Cloyes tech support line too?  "Cloyes Gear & Products, Inc. For Technical Assistance call 479-646-1662 Ext. 228 M-F 7:30am-4:30pm CST"

I changed the 1966 chain set out of the 1965 Cadillac and installed the correct chain.  The 1965 chain is higher quality (wider which makes it stronger, less likely to stretch and there is more surface bearing area so it will last longer).  A 1965 chain would not fit in a 1966 or 1967 due to engine cover.
