My ‘61 has a pretty good leak from the speedo drive. Does anyone know a source for a new seal? A trusted trans. guy has not been able to locate one.
Is't it a simple "O" Ring?
Bruce. >:D
Apparently not.
On many trans, the speedo gear & shaft are plastic, and the area of
seal contact wears down so the seal is no longer effective. Bruce Roe

I bought that part to seal the cable-through-firewall hole....... not even close. The cable passes through the firewall at quite an angle. The correct seal was found from our friends in Scandanavia!
As for the Speedo cable seal leak - I have that problem too, will be interested to see what surfaces.

Get a 5/16" 0 ring at NAPA. I did and it solved the leak.
The Summit part looks like a firewall grimmest, and not the trans seal. I’ll try an O ring and see if that helps, although if it were that easy I think the trans guy would have nailed it. He’s pretty familiar with old GM slushboxes.
It is an O ring. The housing is metal and the speedo shaft is metal. The seal wears out and is a simple replacement.
It's just an o ring. I did one last year cost a few cents and took about half an hour.
Good to know. Always nice to have a repair simpler than anticipated.
My 2 cars (1956 & 1957) are leaking at the spedometer cable; not a lot but it's annoying. I don't see where an o ring can be installed.
Most probably the housing for the later cars are different and allow for an o ring installation.
46-64 hydro matics gear sleeves are the same. The O ring is internal, and hard to see due to being worn down.
Therefore, I did not look good enough. I will have to look again on a spare part. Do you have the diameter of that o ring?
I believe it is 5/16". The 3/8" one balls up inside...it will work for a bit...but then it will leak.
