Title: New toy
Post by: Barry M Wheeler #2189 on November 11, 2017, 05:47:41 PM
Since it is home now, I guess I can start bragging about my new (well nearly new) Cadillac. The guy on eBay is totally wrong. His car is NOT the lowest mileage 1991 Seville around. Mine hasn't turned twenty thousand miles yet. It's too dark right now for pictures, and I hope I can attach the one of the car for you to see.  There is a new (er) Craigslist type site that Glenn Brown put me on, and on a whim Wednesday I hit the Indianapolis area and started flipping through the 90s Cadillacs. When I hit the 1991 grouping I about fell over.

A 1991 Seville (Red) with less than 20K miles and about fifty miles from me. I kept cycling the five pictures over and over. The one of the engine compartment was unreal. Even in a small picture, you could tell that things were original. No interior shots though. I wrote the owner a note and then a few hours later, even made the guy an offer. He finally got back to me and answered some questions. To make a long story short, we made an appointment to see the car on Friday.

Gay and I set out about nine thirty and got there a little after eleven. It sat there at the end of the drive. But...it wouldn't start. The battery was down and he didn't have jumper cables. So I looked, and looked. Found two dimples on the right rear of the car and the weatherstripping on both LH doors has shrunk a little. And the trunk is very slightly faded. Three cracks on the RH front seat that haven't torn and the radio is gone.

"What to do, what to do," I kept thinking as I circled the car again and again.  Logic said that "If it looks this good, what can be wrong with it?" But, the price was pretty salty for not hearing it run. Finally, the guy said, "Since it's not running, you can have it for so and so, and I've got a friend that has a trailer. I'll bring it up to you."

Well, I sure didn't want to pass the car up after his offer, so I finally said, "How about an extra hundred off for the radio being out of the car?" He thought for a moment and then stuck out his hand and said, "I can do that." So I peeled six bills from the stack I had and handed him the rest. He then carefully counted them and said, "OK." He had told me that the car was his grandfather's and his dad had inherited the car. Both worked at GM in Marion, IN. Well, his dad had passed away as well, so the title was still with the lawyer. And he didn't have his printer with his laptop to give me a receipt.

He volunteered to give some of the hundreds back till I got the car, and showed me his DL and Visa cards in his name. And the name of his business, so I did everything wrong and waved my OK. But he emailed me last night, and several times this morning. His friend could not lend him the trailer so he went to U-Haul and rented one. And then had to wait for some time as the guy who'd rented it before him was late getting back with it.

He finally emailed that the car was loaded and he was on his way. About an hour and a half later I told Gay I was going out to move our car to give him room if he had to park it on the street. I did so and had just gotten sat down on our sun porch when I saw him come into view. He thought he could get the unit turned around in the space in front of my garage and although it took some doing, we got him facing "out" again and we let the car roll itself off the trailer. Whee.

So I met an honest man. It's on the charger right now and hopefully it will still hold a charge as it has all the correct labels in mint condition on it. If it won't hold the charge, I may see if I can have it rejuvenated. I'm looking forward to making sure that everything is A-OK before we start driving it regularly. And hopefully being able to sell the leased ATS.

I had been looking at a "worn-out" '91 Seville in the South with 54k. I was suspicious of the deal the guy proposed and I would have had to fly down and drive back, so finding this one close to home was providential.  And for less money as well.

Gee wiz Barry --- after all this climactic buildup,  no pictures, and a dead link to the advert... you have a transnational audience who have been anticipating the FINAL CHAPTER!     James

I clicked on the line and the picture came right up. It will show black for a moment, then come up from the bottom. (It takes a few seconds to load.) Try it again and let me know. After our Beef and Noodle dinner after church tomorrow, I will take some more pictures and in the normal manner. BW

Maybe it is only visible to Barry.   Could have a security thing on it.

Barry,

I got the same error as James.  Glad you were able to find one close to home.  As the old saying goes, "All things come to he who waits."

If this doesn't work, you guys will just have to be patient for about fifteen hours. Take care, BW

I'll start a new thread. I may be more into the afternoon with the pictures. We lost a very good friend last night and don't know what I may need to do to help the family.

It's rained all afternoon guys so I don't have pictures as yet. Yes, that is my car on Craigslist. He had it listed on both places.

Does a 1985 Lincoln have a 6 digit odometer? Barry's cadillac does to verify the mileage.

Bob,

Nice Lincoln.  This design ate into Cadillac sales (especially due to 4.1 powered Caddys).  moderators might take that pic down, as they generally only allow photos of Cadillacs.

CADDYHOLIC,

No.  My old brand X vehicle odometer rolls over after 99,999.9 miles and starts again at zero. that was my point about claimed mileage. . Perhaps there is a way to read the prior hundreds of thousands of miles. But will a collector 30 years from now understand 20th century technology?

Oh well....I won't be around to explain.
