Hi,
I´m still working on my friend Tayfun´s 1981 Cadillac Eldorado project.
One of the last projects we have to finish now is the emission control system and we are having a hard time finishing this, as we just can´t find the Airmanagement Valve Solenoids anywhere. One of them seems to be defective as it causes the ECM to burn through every time its connected. We have toasted about 6 ECM´s before we found the problem.

Does anybody have this valve including the solenoids, or the solenoids laying around somewhere or know a source for good used ones?

You can see some pictures of the valve and solenoids and the Pimperado itself here:

Any help is highly appreciated!

thanks,

Hmmm, a thread from 2008.........
6 ecu's?  Who was it that said something about doing the exact same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?

Unplugging the diverter valve should not keep the engine from starting or running.  All that valve does is direct the AIR (smog pump) flow to different places depending on conditions to improve emissions.  Its all on the exhaust side of things so doesn't directly effect the engine running.   Ya it could effect the reading the computer sees on the O2 sensor and if it was not connected could cause the computer to go into some sort of a limp mode which could effect performance, emissions, and economy but really should not keep the engine from running.

Engine shown isn't the stock motor for the car so there is nothing useful to be learned here.

Wow - this is an old thread...
Just as a folllow up. We replaced the valve and the ECMs no longer were fried...
@Eric - this is the stock motor. Everything was plated though.
@Tj - the engine ran without this valve but itwould run in emergency mode.

Anyways - very old thread. My friend sold the car a couple of years ago...

What engine is that? Was it modified?  A V8-6-4 would have had tower rocker covers with wiring at the top for the valve selectors, it doesn't appear to be a V6 and it's not a diesel. Those were the three engines available in an '81 Eldorado.

I went to the website and checked out one of the videos. Very high production value in the video and very impressive shop work technique. White coveralls and white cotton gloves on the interior. Very clean shop space.

Nice car. I like the ‘58.

Its the original 368, but the variable displacement components were removed and regular valve covers were installed instead. Everything else were stock parts which were chrome and gold plated or polished.
