Flat Cams Common On 4.1 Engines?

Aprules2, this car is acting like your was. Idles fine, revs up OK initially but after around 2k rpm it starts popping/backfiring out the intake.

Is it constant almost like a steady pop pop pop over and over and it gets louder and faster with more rpm?

That sounds like a bad camshaft. I don't know the eldo's or 4100s that well, can you pull the radiator, condenser, and grill out, then slide the cam out through he front of the car rather than pulling the engine?

Many cams failed due to tight valve guide clearances, when the valves carboned up they would bind in the guides overloading the lobes. Tough days for me working for Cadillac back then!
