I need a green rubber grommet that fits at the connection of two parts of the gear shift linkage near the firewall and near the steering column.  This is to eliminate slop in the gear shift lever position.  I am told by Cadillac dealer this is part number 10017662, but has been discontinued and is not available.  I thought I had found and purchased one on line, but follow up email from source said no longer available.  Any leads appreciated.

Hi George,

I had the exact problem with mine... owned it for nearly 25 years, and finally, when there were no more grommets available , may be fifteen years ago, I used some marine hose-- it fit snugly over the shaft, and took up the position on the hole end of the drive mechanism.  I can't recall the size, but fortunately, the hose is readily available.  Other then purchasing some tiny bits of hose, the challenge is to install the "C" chip or whatever retainer hold it on.  It worked well for the remainder of the car's life...

I just bought a couple of sets on ebay for $20.00 for each 3 Pc set.

You can also use door bushings if you ream them a bit.
They are metal so they don't wear out.

Gentlemen:
Thanks to both of you for your replies.  I was thinking about trying to make something to work, and I am glad to hear it has been done before.

This thread was very helpful. My Eldorado telltale linkage is perfect now. Check out this thread:
