Hello I am new to the forum.  I have a 1956 Cadillac series 62 and I have an issue with the noise from the rear end. When you go to speed up  every revolution there's a slight Rub noise . It's hard to explain but it sounds like there is a rubbing noise ever half revolution of the driver rear tire or drum.  Has anyone experienced this before thank you in advance .

Welcome Michael,

There could be a number of things causing this, but firstly have a really good look at the tyre, especially the inside, that is the side that is opposite the outside, as you might have a tyre wall that is bubbling, and hitting part of the car.

PS.   You have an email from me that requires your attention.

Thank you for the information I just received the car off at Hauler tonight and on the drive home I noticed the noise. Hopefully is the tire then I can work on the power steering pump

Ah ha,

I would be thoroughly checking underneath in case the Hauler did anything wrong, and or left anything attached underneath.

It could also be that wheel the bearings are gone .I had it with my car .

Could be the propeller shaft is  hitting the floor tunnel. This is usually due to weak or tired suspension springs/shocks or excessive weight in trunk. Inspection of the area should prove evident with scarring of the parts meeting.

Thank you everyone. I'll be checking it out today I will post any findings

The simplist first step I would do is rotate the front and rear wheels and see if the noise disappears or goes to the front.

Good afternoon everyone. So upon checking there is no wear or rubbing that I can see under the car. So I now am going to have to check the drum and axle bearing. And dig in that area. It is for sure coming from the driver hand rear wheel area.  :(. Thank you to everyone that gave me ideas. So besides that noise the power steering pump has a wine noise

Hello Everyone,

so i think the noise on my rear end is coming from the diff.
has any one rebuild one before?
are they limited slip? did they have that in  1956? if so should the diff have a special fluid added?

Where would i search for parts for the diff to rebuild it.

The rear axle cannot be rebuild since the differential gears are all riveted.    :(

No they are not. The Shop Manual list the rear axle as SAE 90 Multi-propose type gear lubricant.

You can only replace the axle shaft bearings and seals, as well as the axle oil seal, other than those the complete unit would need to be replace.

They can be rebuilt, with new bearings and seals.
I had my 59 diff head rebuilt, a few years ago by a place that specialised in diff head repair, ( here in New Zealand ).
I bought all the bearings and seals first, so all they had to do was the work.
They said it was no big deal, and they gave me the old bearings, which were pretty worn.
I have heard they have turned other people away, but I think it was because they couldn't be bothered with the hassle of getting the parts. I just got the bearing numbers and ordered them. I also got a nos rear yoke from Ted Holcome and had that installed at the same time. I often wonder when I look at old cars, especially the ones from the thirties, what state the rear ends must be in. My car had done 103 thousand miles and the bearings had worn though the case hardening in places, although they probably would have lasted for years.
I would say in your case probably a run outer wheel bearing.

Hello everyone. So I pulled both axles finally today. The driver bearing was a little rusty as well as sand paper sounding. Do I will be pressing bearings tomorrow. Hope this solves the issue. I do not have a set up to pull the third member. Has anyone rebuilt one of the power steering pumps on one of these? I might tackle that next.

i got the bearings pressed on and axles set back in. works great.
has anyone rebuilt a 365?

I had my '56 done a few years back by a local old timer machine shop, not sure what specific question you may have.  ???

I did a few they are simple to tackle, if you have the Service Manual just follow the steps on section 5. One keep point is to take pictures when you dismantle the pump in case of any issues. One piece which you need to place correctly is the flow control valve, also place/scribe alignment marks across the body, pump ring and cover to help on the install, and the there should be an embossed arrow on the pump ring to show the direction of the pump rotation.

Good luck..!

I rebuilt all 3 engines from my cars. Not a big deal, just the parts are heavy! I got new pistons and all the other necessary parts from Terrill Machine in Texas.

I'm in the process of having my 365 rebuilt. Just received all the parts yesterday from Terrill's Machine in Texas as well. I'm doing the in and out and engine compartment restore, but not the engine itself. Let us know a specific question and I'll get the answer from my guys. Actually, Feltz at Terrill's is the most helpful person you could ask.
