I ordered a 37-38 shop manual off eBay hoping it would tell about adjusting shifter linkage but it only shows floor shift, should I have tried to find 38-39? Thanks

The 38 shop manual is a supplement to the 37 manual.  The 38 supplement has all about the new column shift for 38.  It got changed slightly in 39.

Some of the re-print manuals are rubbish and incomplete.
This should help you but it may not scan very well.
