Title: Another Survivor, getting a make-over rather than a resto.
Post by: Jeepers Creepers on April 23, 2017, 10:02:40 PM
My wife and I bought our Fleetwood in August last year and shipped it home, leaving Customs and Quarantine here in Australia on the 17th of Nov.

On the 30th of Nov, we had rego, so off came the Californian plates and on went the new ones and we're ready to roll.

So, for 3 months, we drove the car a fair bit, putting approx. 3,000 miles on it in that time.
For a car that only averaged 2,500 mile per year, for 53 years, we took it very carefully and tried not to over stress the poor ol girl.

However, on the 13th of March, a small piece of piston decided it was too tired to continue, so it tapped the spark plug shut, then went straight out the exhaust port.
Not one mark, on the piston, valves or heads.... LOL

So began, the engine rebuild and engine bay tidy up.
Its turned out to be a very worth while exercise, as you'll see by the timing chain. Most times, you could measure the amount of retard from the chain in degrees.
This camshaft was running about 4 hours behind the crank.  :o

G'day Kevin,

Boy, you were lucky in a number of ways.

(1)   The internals of the engine look really clean, and no sludge whatsoever.
(2)   The Cam gear was caught before it totally stripped off all the nylon.
(3)   The piston piece managed to find its' way out without causing damage.

The picture of the cam gear in the process of self-destruction is a really good one to show what happens during the tooth decay, before the total rot sets in.

Bruce. >:D

Yeah, pretty lucky huh.

I reckon, anyone with a 100,000 miles on board, should be doing the chain.
Most cam belts on modern crap are 100,000klm change over I think

Our car has 124,000 on the dial, but will go back together with standard mains and big ends.
ITs got between 1 to 2 and half thou wear across the 8 bores.

If I wasn't keeping it or trying to do a quickie build, i'd bash 8 standard jam tins in it and button it back together.

BUT, as i'm keeping it, she's going 30 thou over, brand new stock cam, lifters blah blah and we'll do a make over on the engine bay while she's apart.

I'm servicing the turbo 400 tomorrow and of course, a new front seal while its easy to get at.

53 years of grease and crap.

Pressure washed clean ready for some fresh paint soon.

The last two week-ends, has seen the auto serviced and a new front pump seal fitted and a bit of paint over some bits to make it nice.
The alt. has been checked and OK'd.
The starter motor is all but shot, but I have a new one arriving tomorrow.

Gave the front wheel bearing a good going over, repack and refitted.

Just taking it step by step..... 8)

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been going over every nut and bolt I can find and make sure everything is tight as a drum.
I'm expecting the block and heads back any time now, so I've been cleaning and painting a few bits ready for the big day.

I can't get the exact colour here in Oz, but this came up pretty close.

That is one mighty nice piece of art. The best I can do is use crayons if there are lines.
I admire your patience.

Mate, the collection of painted goodies is getting bigger by the day.  :o

If the weather forecast stays true, we'll paint the engine bay this week-end and have all the engine bits at home early next week.

Photo's to follow.  8)

We have a painted engine bay now, as well as the air cleaner assembly and the underside of the hood in a semi-gloss black. (Looks pretty glossy to me, but it might settle.)

The hood also received its insulation in-fills and the rubber wind deflector today as well. The mate and myself are stuffed now, its been a big week-end.

In an effort to save me disconnecting the air cond, power steering and cruise control, I made a cradle to hold everything up and out of the way... sort of.

As it says in the heading, not a restoration, but a makeover of a good survivor/driver car.

This is the insulation in-fills I used on our car. Whilst I know its not the correct insulation, I preferred the look of this stuff and it seemed to blend nicer colour wise.

Not as thick, maybe half an inch thick I reckon. I just made up some thin cardboard templates and then cut the stuff from a sheet. It was only about $80.00 for the sheet, so pretty good value too.

You might notice too, I cut a pair out for the very front of the hood as well.

There are a few things I've done that are NOT ORIGINAL but nothing that couldn't be rectified should some-one buy it one day (Not likely to be getting sold in the next 20 years) and want it 100% as per the factory.

The other issue being in Oz, is the crappy dollar exchange. Our dollar here, only buys about 74 cents in the US dollar at the moment, so it all gets a bit expensive by the time you add in some freight as well.

Oh man, feeling pretty chuffed today.

Nice squeaky clean engine block with the rotating assembly installed and neatly wrapped in plastic came home today. Oh, and two Cylinder heads, all done and assembled and wrapped in plastic too.

Now, I still have to finish the assembly and fit it back in the car, but hell, it sure is one trick looking bit of gear at the moment.

If anyone is interested in the specs,
Pistons, .030 over @ .002 clearance.
Mains, standard @ .003 clearance.
B/ends, standard @ .0025 clearance. (All bearings are Federal Mogul brand.)

Zero deck height on the block.
Hastings rings, the top ring is running @ .018" and the second ring @ .020"

The rear main cap modified to suit the later bearings and using a neoprene seal.

The heads received a fairly standard 3 angle valve job and 16 new bronze guide liners.

I reckon, by the time I stuff about painting or refurbishing each and every item as I go and get the whole thing in and running, we'll be back on the road by 4 to 5 weeks I think...... so yeah, i'm pretty happy today.... :)

Inspiring-- and thank you for sharing the documentation with pics.  '64 Fleetwood is an especially wonderfully designed car, and you're adding tremendous value and longevity for a worthy piece of engineering excellence.    James

Thanks for the kind words James.

I tell ya, putting them back together is bloody slow going  :o when you paint every part prior to bolting it onto the car or the engine.
The pile on the garage floor is pretty big, but will all start to find a home now on the big lump of iron in the engine stand.

Now, the reason the cover has gone on a non painted engine, was we needed to put a dial gauge on number 1 cylinder and verify the timing marks are correct. No good assuming, however, it this case, it was spot on correct.

Snipped a day off work today to get a pain in the butt job done and out of the way. (Just a bit easier to do with no motor in the frame rails)

Both upper control arms out, (Taking note and marking the camber settings prior to removal) and got the local mechanics up the road to press the old upper bushes out and press the new ones in. (I'll get a wheel alignment done once we're up and running)

Left 'em there for 4 hours while I came home and cut and shaped every rubber splash apron thingys for the inner fenders. Bit slow going, but each one done and dusted.

Upper arms back in and the final rubbers that sit over the arms cut and fitted. I don't work this hard when i'm mowing lawns for people.

The Fleetwoods back in the shed, so I managed to get the short block into primer and its first coat of blue.

The car itself now, is pretty much ready to receive the engine, so I have to get my finger out and get that to a finished product.
Geez, I'm buggered, i'm going for a beer, c ya.

I spent a fair bit of time on the week-end making sure the car is ready to receive the engine again. Only the small job of replacing the speedo drive O-ring to go and a final, final, final once over, and the car is ready.

The engine is now a COMPLETE SHORT MOTOR and will most likely get the heads put on it tomorrow. At this rate, the motor installation will be the week-end of the 24th and 25th. I could push for this week-end, but I'm going to take my time to a achieve a perfect result or as perfect as I can get it.

This morning saw a "dry fit up" of the sump as the first job to do. Why you ask?..... over time, often, sumps are warped out of shape by knuckle-heads screwing the bejesus out of them, which buckles the sealing edge.

Ours was very good and needed no repairs and the clearance to the oil pick-up was fine. (another trap, always check this) So it was on with the sump, oil pump, water pump, fuel pump and any other pump I could find today.

I also did a "dry fit up" of the new starter motor. Our car is missing the starter to engine brace.... So, to try to take some pressure off the adaptor plate for the T400 and prevent it cracking, I fabricated a small bracket to help keep it all in sync. The original Cadillac bracket, is for my liking, a bit over engineered and hard to find these days, so it was up the Campbell Brains Trust to come up with something simple. This was way easier to do with the engine on the stand. The materials I had here and it cost me $10.00 for a bit of welding and I reckon it'll do the job just fine.

I scrubbed the hell out of all the head bolts this afternoon, noting a couple do go into water jackets, so sealer will go on the offending bolts.

I'm trying to make it all "pretty with paint" as I go, but as our car is a survivor/driver, I reckon it will scrub ok. I'll pop a couple of pictures up later on today or early tomorrow.

Cheers, Kev

Hi mate, yeah, you still have the end of the spring loaded nut that gives you the tension on the swivel in the centre hole. The template shows it as needing the 3 holes as well and a photo of a car with a R/H mirror from new had the same thing.

Good question though. ;)

I got stuck in again this morning, and now the heads and rockers  etc are all on and tensioned up. Sorta looks like a real engine now.  :o

Just checked mine again before I start drilling. Looks like the center hole for the mirror stem does not go past the rubber gasket. No template was included from OPG. Unless it's barely noticeable?

If you want a template, contact Russ Austin from on here or the 63/64 chapter, as on there, is the exact measurements you will need in the help section
(I'm assuming you have a 63 or 64)
The template does have a larger hole in the centre, as its a take-off from the L/H mirror.

Just allow for it when you measure it up..... I measured about 6 times before going near it with a drill.
Lots of masking tape over the door is a good move too.
I used a right angle drill to do the bolt hole in the leading edge of the door.

If I can do it and get it correct....anyone can... ::)

Nearly there, just have to prime the oiling system, fit the manifold and centre cover and install it back in the car.

When I prime this engine, it will get done on TDC, then turn it over for 1 stroke by hand, prime again, repeat, and repeat. The engine will arrive back at TDC and all bearing, lifter, pushrods, rockers everything, is lubed.

I'll also make sure the lifters and pushrods are turning during the priming procedure. If they aren't turning then, there is a very high chance, they won't turn when running and will wipe off a lobe on the new camshaft. No second chance on a flat tappet cam.

It may be a temporary set up but, why is the oil filter pointing up rather than down?

BTW, is there a more elegant engine color than Cadillac dark blue?

Kevin,

Looked at earlier pics you posted and I see it is correct orientation. I know the front over on a '64 is different than later years but I thought it was minor. Attached pic is from my '66 and the location changed dramatically.

Carry on.... You're doing a beautiful job.

You put some witness marks on everything and yeah, they should show a change when they turn. (It won't be by a heap, but they will begin to turn.)

I passed a good milestone today, priming the engine with oil. I spent a few minutes this morning designing a tool for the job and spent $20.00 with the welding guy up the road.

This is a really important step in any engine rebuild and starting out on TDC is best.

1st thing, is put a small witness mark on every pushrod and the top edge of every lifter.

2nd.....Oil filter and housing back off, pour oil down the secondary housing to flood the oil pump gears. Refit the oil filter housing and fill the oil filter with oil. Fill engine with 4 litres of oil and proceed to wind up oil pressure.

3rd.... Turn engine over for one stroke and repeat oil pressure priming.

Keep going, until number one cylinder is back on TDC to fire, you have now completed a full 4 stroke cycle of the engine and the engine is oiled up ready for a start up.

Now, go back to your witness marks and make sure each and every lifter has begun to turn and do the same with the pushrods.

If the lifters in particular, haven't turned at all..... STOP and find out why, as you'll destroy the cam and lifters on start up.

When I do my witness marks on the lifters and pushrods, I just use a black permanent marker felt pen. Just a tiny dot on everything is all that's needed.
I did take a couple of pics to show how much the lifters/pushrods should turn and i'll pop them on here later on.

I need the wife to load 'em into the computer for me.....  :-\

In this photo, you can see the pushrods have all started to shake their booty.

The lifters are the most important to have moving of course and I forgot to take a pic of them, but trust me, they did do the "Caddy Shuffle."
For the Aussie members on here, this is an excellent oil for our old flat tappet monsters.

(https://forums.cadillaclasalle.club/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh200%2Ffigjam007%2FCars%2FCADDY%2FPiston%2520Broke%2FGEDC0230_zpszv4zyryr.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=53d88b74f8e3c9176613c791719bffed0577422b) (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/figjam007/media/Cars/CADDY/Piston%20Broke/GEDC0230_zpszv4zyryr.jpg.html)

Well, the car is all prepped now ready for an engine. (Except 4 trillion wires and hoses everywhere)

(https://forums.cadillaclasalle.club/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi64.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh200%2Ffigjam007%2FCars%2FCADDY%2FPiston%2520Broke%2FGEDC0231_zpsv9fbxwrd.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=d77bce9d818cff9b7db08f1fe03ddee5c2c65607) (http://s64.photobucket.com/user/figjam007/media/Cars/CADDY/Piston%20Broke/GEDC0231_zpsv9fbxwrd.jpg.html)

The engine now only requires the dizzy and coil fitted and it can go in tomorrow..... except.....until yesterday, some dill (ME) forgot to order the new engine mounts, so I get to stand around and twiddle my thumbs for a few days.

I am using Castrol 10W40 in my 500.

I thought 20W60 would be a bit too dense, even in Queensland.

Bruce. >:D

PS.   I have never watched my lifters turning as I always complete the engine before spinning the pump.

PPS.   What was the oil pressure?   That is important to me.

No gauge connected at the time of priming mate, just wanting to oil the engine throughout prior to a kick in the guts.
I've kitted and rebuilt the oil pump, so whatever they had new is what it should now.

I will gauge it when I start it though.

I always plumb in a mechanical oil pressure gauge to any engine I rebuild.   Nice to know what the relief valve is set to.

Easier to add or remove a shim before it is in the engine bay.

Kevin , the T' Devil' has got it. A bit too tactful , he : that 20W/60 would certainly be too dense in Q'land , perhaps even in the territory from which the H' Devil hails ! Oils should operate within a temperature/viscosity envelope which precludes even 20W/50. Please google up  Selection of the Right Motor Oil-draft 17  33 pages which YOU need to read. When you are through , you will know more about engine oil than 98 , or 99% of the people who have not read it. You will then see why the Amsoil Z-Rod 10W/30 , with plenty of zinc and phosphorus will be the best oil for most conditions. I gather Q'land gets rather hot from time to time. If need be , you could run Z-Rod 20W/50 half & half with the lighter , for a 15W/40. If you plan on going to H' , probably go with the heaviest stuff. It may just save your engine , if not your soul.  - Carl

P.S. : Neither Richard Widman , (the author of the definitive 33 pg. PDF distilled from API and SAE tech journals , for the benefit of all literate car guys) , nor I , have any connection to , nor represent Amsoil in any way. Having made that disclosure , as long as you are at the keyboard , Google up Amsoil. Read what Z-Rod is , and check out the break in oil they make while you are at it. Flat tappers , indeed ! I am very glad you brought the subject up. As careful as you are , .................  - CC

The oil we're using will be fine for the application.... but thanks for caring.  ;)

Hi Kevin ! Decorum noted. And thank you for recognizing one of my faults. I do care . To a fault. Of course I studied your Penrite link , and read thoroughly about relevant products. I do , and have used several Penrite products for quite some time. Richard Widman, the author of the definitive work I recommend to you , knows several orders of magnitude more about lubricants than you and I together. Have you found time to read it yet ? Almost all who do so have some of their misconceptions shattered. I am one of the great majority. You will be too , accruing to the benefit of your engines. I certainly don't react to someone politely disagreeing with me. I would regard someone who disagrees with a world class authority on anything as a bit of a fool. For example , there is a minute fraction of the population who believe that the world has not been getting warmer , even in the face of melting glaciers all over Earth , and ocean temperatures rising everywhere. That is the very definition of global warming. Those who don't understand , and rail against objective reality , are by definition, fools. People who simply don't know what synthetic oil is are not fools at all. They just need to learn a "new trick". One never learns so well as when having long held biases shown to be erroneous.   - Carl

To be honest Carl, no I haven't had time to read it yet.
I didn't know you guys had Penrite in the US, learn something new everyday.  :)

Another reason I went with the Penrite oil I did, was it came highly recommended by the mechanic that did the rotating assembly for me.
He's built engines for 5 and 6 second drag cars all the way down to grandpa spec stockers.
During his years, he also did 5 years in an engine machine shop.

He's a highly respected, very talented guy.
I will get to read the article you mentioned when time permits..... but I gotta say.... it won't be this week.

Now, for some news on the Fleetwood, the new engine mounts arrived yesterday, so i'm odds on to be fitting an engine this week-end.
In fact, being winter here and the lawn mowing has finally slowed a tad, I might, if I can get all my ducks in a row, be able to start the installation on Friday.

I'm lucky the mowing has slowed a tad, I've been waiting for a new gearbox (arrived yesterday) for mower #1 and then mower #2 popped an axle yesterday just as I finished a mow. (parts arriving Thursday for that one)
Lucky, mower #3 is still a runner...... I just have to repair 2 mowers and do the Caddy install this week-end and I have my 94, yep.... 94 year old Mum staying for the week as well.

Its all happening at my house this week.... :o

Kevin ! .....? I'm trying to do the math : burst another pre-conception in what remains of my mind. From your phenomenal energy and productivity , I had assumed you are what I was in my 30s - early 40s. But that does not compute ! Here is to your Mom's continued good health ! You too , as you obviously have inherited some very strong genes ! Salud !

In my case , (back to topic) , I had to read "Widman" twice. I will only be 73 in a few days , but my doctors warn me that with all my health issues , I am physically more like a guy in my late 80s. I agree. Concentration is a problem , and it takes me forever to do even simple routines. I think I should read "W" a third time. I am sure that without his graphs , it would not have got through to me in ten readings. I am 100% sure you will "get it" , "single pass". As I mentioned, W. has put into informed layman's terms , the relevant conclusions derived from tech journals. I do not know what your profession may be , perhaps you are able to drink from the source. In my more alert past , I ocasionally tried to read tech journals regarding my second most expensive hobby , (astronomy/telescope engineering) , and I found it a humbling waste of my time. Browsing bookstores , I used to squander money on the occasional book , which did not have one paragraph out of 1400 pages that I could fully understand. Chandrasekhar's "Radiative Transfer" (the physics of stellar energy production) , is heavier going yet for me. Gives me that slap in the face I need from time to time to moderate the internal retention rate which tends to fill me up with myself from time to time. Nothing but normal reading for any car folk embodied in "W". Please enjoy as time permits. I , and an AACA forum friend , a Ph.D. Kiwi , frequently implore others to "learn-up" via Richard Widman. As did I , the erudite Kiwi Professor had long held misconceptions zapped , we each re-trimmed our sails accordingly.

O.K. , I have just imposed on your time a bit too much. And Spring is yielding to Summer here. I hope you live in one of those very temperate regions of the Austral Continent where pleasant climate is enjoyed year 'round.  - Carl

Carl ol mate, I'm 57 years old for the record. (Last month actually)

Knocked over 4 mowing jobs before 12:00, came home, painted some nut and bolts ready for the week-end and fitted the new engine mounts.
I've jagged Friday off, so will start a day early doing the install.

The plan is, motor in on Friday, double check everything Saturday for a Saturday start up. Retention the heads on Sunday morning, bonnet (Hood) back on Sunday afternoon and all done and dusted......... THATS THE PLAN......

Carl, google Tin Can Bay Queensland and you'll see where I am. If God owned Tin Can Bay, he live here and rent out heaven.  ;D

We are well into the first month of winter here, lows of 12 to 16 Celsius and highs of 22 to 24 Celsius. Buggered if I know what it is in Fahrenheit.
Maaaate, ya wouldn't be dead for quids.

Well ! Thank you for the fantasy trip to your beautiful area ! I see what you mean. In a way , it has some resemblance to a combination of Hawaii, Florida, and Costa Rica. Very , very nice ! And I learned that the average Winter temp is 20 C. (1.8 X temp C) + 32 means that it is 68 F , or a very comfortable Winter , perhaps like some delightful areas of California. Now what about these "shark dives" ? If it is safe , sounds like a thrill ! (Hmmm..... I suppose some people would find it a more satisfying thrill if NOT safe !). We hear about Australian sharks. I wish I could still travel that far. I have a nephew who with his wife moved to Tasmania. I would have liked to visit very much.

Kevin I am very curious as to the condition of your oil pump on tear down. Maybe I should re-read all this. See what I mean by needing to read things 3 times ? Maybe you have covered it already. If so I will go back again. I used to have a very good memory. The good side of it is that I can see a movie that I like several times , months apart, and in some ways it is like I never saw it ! At any rate if you covered it and I forgot , just say "go back and read again". I do remember having trouble with the oil pump on my '65 Eldo , but that was about 45 years ago , so it is a bit like 2 or 3 weeks ago by now.

Belated Happy Birthday , Kevin ! I will be 73 on Argentine Independence Day. If I had been born there , I would automatically have been exempt from military obligation ! And my name might have been  - Carlos

P.S. : I might be obtuse, but what does your last line mean ?

The oil pump as in pretty good condition Carl, just took a very light touch up on the faces etc and install new gears, spring etc and back together.
I'll have a gauge on it for start up, but it had oil pressure quickly with just a normal ratchet bar on the made up drive tells me it should be pretty good.

Yes , Kevin , as I was mucking around in my grey matter , I did finally remember something you wrote on the oil pump. Found it , and read that you "kitted it". The reason I ask , is that I have been talking extensively with our fellow member Kim Kaiser , who just became a plural Cadillac owner. A well maintained , single family owned since new , air conditioned (presently inop - never fear the "Kid" is here on the forum), tilt steering wheel , '63 CDV. From my long ago '63 & also 429 years , I have advised him to get a look at it , perhaps while the radiator must be out (also recommend he do pre-emptive water pump rebuild if not recently done as per the complete service records he has. Therefore , how does one get the "kit" , and any advice you and other guys who have been in the oil pump recently can give Kim , please. He has to go there in any case , as there has been slow leakage for some time. On behalf of Kim who gallantly is learning quickly , after starting with little experience , I thank you very much !   - Carl

Carl, Get them onto the 63/64 chapter..... the guys over there are fantastic to work with and will have many more answers than me.

I've set up an oil pressure gauge now for a true reading when we fire the ol girl up.

I've also done a temporary electric fuel pump set-up in the main line as well. Being a BRAND NEW CAMSHAFT, I want this engine to fire up on the first revolution, so this way I can prime the carb and as it fires, we can take it straight to 2,000 rpm for a specific time frame to bed the cam and lifters.

I reckon, if I get a fair run at this tomorrow, we may just get a chance to start her up tomorrow afternoon.
If its not ready, so be it, but tomorrow would be nice.

I wish I could remember how the alt and air con brackets were set up. I've got one fairly poor photo I took to go off, but i'm hoping once I get into it, it may look a tad easier than it does at the moment.  :o  :o :-[  ::)

Plenty of photos to be taken and if I remember, i'll video the start up.

We are gathered here today to see the coming of one.
In the side driveway, in the morning sunshine and in the sight of God, I ask those present to witness the joining of these two  portions of Cadillac in holy matrimony.

Do you, Miss Fleetwood 1964, take Big Block 429 to be your lawful wedded engine?
To have and to hold with your front cross member, to care and to supply gas, to accelerate sensibly when required, to use your brakes when danger appears, to cruise in Cadillac style from this day forward?

I Do.

Do you, Big Block 429, take Miss Fleetwood 1964 to be your lawful wedded body.
To have and to hold, with your warm exhaust manifolds, to never overheat and never over-rev.
To love and to cherish and to cruise in Cadillac style from this day forward?

I Do.

By the power vested in me (As long as my wife says yes) I now pronounce you a classic car.
You may now enter the bride.....

(Insert wedding music here)

The bride looking lovely in white.

Well, at 12:08 this afternoon, we fired the 64 into life and did the first 10 minute stint of the camshaft break-in procedure. She fired on the first revolution and was on song really nice.

It will get a second 10 minute stint in the morning.

The bloody O-Ring on the crossover/water pump connection was leaking.... bugger it.

Anyway, that the Caddy done for today, as I have to go and put a gearbox in a lawn mower now.... oh, joy oh joy

PPS.   What was the oil pressure?   That is important to me.

Hi Bruce, oil pressure was solid at 35 to 37 PSI @ 2,000 RPM. (I'd hoped it would've been more around the 45 to 50 region being a rebuilt pump)

I thought this was a tad low, but once i'd started the camshaft break-in, I wasn't stopping and I felt that it was an OK pressure for the revs.
Checked on several sites and it turns out...... that's as good as it gets with a 429 Cadillac due to the pressure relieve valve.

I'm a bit dirty on myself for not checking that fact prior to start up.  :o

The only way to increase the oil pressure is to increase the pressure relief valve spring.

BUT, when doing that, one must be careful of the associated problems with running higher pressure, with retaining the factory bearing tolerances.

Too tight a bearing clearance combined with high oil pressure can result in spun bearings as the excess pressure wants to "grab" hold of the bearing shells because it cannot get out between the connecting rod and crankshaft because of the tighter clearances.

When rebuilding an engine the machinist needs to know all the parameters that are going to be used within the engine.   Many backyard "mechanics" have blamed the machinist for a destroyed engine, when they should have blamed themselves for over-pressurising the oiling system.

The factory spent countless hundreds of millions of dollars in designing and testing parts, yet people will think they know better, and stick in a longer spring, or add a pile of washers to gain something that "looks" good.

MAN , I love the way you particular Southerners talk ! Our Southerners here have the most wonderful way of speaking. Very expressive, with such a delightful "accent". Aunt Louise is from New Orleans , and that is its own variation. She is a true Southern Belle , and I have written somewhere about her ability to charm her way to a smile from every cop who ever pulled her over. She was a leadfoot in her time. Still had a bit of it in her when I stayed with her after Hurricane Katrina. She needed remedial driving lessons , and feared her ability to evacuate by Buick in the case of another h'cane Didn't take too long to set her straight. "Aunt Louise , all ya gotta do is slow down. Age conveys certain privilege, Auntie. You will be forgiven for driving 5 or 10 under. And you will have better lane control than you do with your typical 10 over !" That is when she told me about batting 1000 against every cop who had intended to pitch her a ticket ! From the twinkle in her clear blue eyes , I could see why ! We had a great laugh !  - Carl

The third and final 2,000 rpm stint was done yesterday and the car got to idle for the first time. It sounds very crisp after having a timing light waved over it too.

Even having a Grandpa spec single exhaust pipe, it still sounds good out the back..... the (strong silent type) thing springs to mind.

All I have left now, is fix the water leak from the crossover pipe to water pump O-ring, put all the vacuum fittings on, throttle linkages and associated crap, run a spanner over everything as a double check, final check of the timing, refit the bonnet (Hood), give the ol girl a good wash and begin driving for a few miles.

Over all, I'm happier than a baby beaver in a toothpick factory.

Now, when you start driving it, don't baby it too much, and when warm, the engine that is, don't forget to bed the Rings in.   That is important.

I've got 3 mates booked in for the refitting of the hood this Saturday...All the throttle linkages were painted and refitted yesterday and all the vacuum lines and tank reattached.

Apart from redoing the leaking O-ring, mounting the Air Cond Compressor, a radiator overflow hose, I'm pretty much a done deal now...... After the hoods back on, i'll have to wash the ol girl, as she's a bit dusty from 3 months of sitting around, but......then it will be the first road test..... good times are coming.

The next items on the agenda for the "Make-over", is to fit a new headlight switch and attack the Climate Control Air Cond.

I reckon we might enjoy the car for a few months first and the switch should only be a few hours to do, so I can slip that in anytime.
The air cond would see the car off the road for a month I reckon.

Yep, that's what happens.   Get lots of people virtually locked in for free, then charge.

Norton did that when they came on the scene.   It was free, with free updates, then once everyone was using Norton, the charges came in, annually.   And it wasn't free to join any more.

Well, we went back on the road last Saturday and I now have 140 miles on the rebuilt engine. It feels strong and smooth.

The best part, is everything still works in the car, so after pulling the bloody thing apart, I'm managed to put it all back correctly.  :) YAY
This week-end will see the run-in continue and I'm going to enjoy the car now for a little while.

These are the jobs I did while the engine was out.

1. Rebuilt the engine. (that was the big one, as it was a complete rebuild, not just a freshen up)
2. Re-graph the distributor to factory specs.
3. Reco the alternator.
4. Reco the starter, which ended up being a brand new starter in the end.
5. Fit brand new heavy duty battery cables.
6. Repaint the engine bay and under the hood.
7. Repack the front wheel bearings.
8. Replace the upper control arm bushes.
9. Service the auto.
10. Replace every flexible fuel line front and back.
11. Flush out the fuel tank.
12. Check and clean brakes on all 4 corners.
13. Paint or do a basic detail job on every part removed and refitted during the last 3 months.
14. Make from scratch and replace every rubber splash guard/apron for the engine bay and battery cradle.
15. Fit a brand (repro) elusive R/H mirror.

These are the jobs I still want to achieve.

1. Fit the new headlight switch.  (I have it here.)
2. Pull apart and redo the climate control air cond system. (It works, but not perfectly)

Number 2 will see the car off the road for a month I reckon.

Sorry PhotoBucket has buggered up posting pictures for me and i'm not paying the 400 or 500 dollars they want to be able to post my stuff.
I also hope I haven't bored you guys to death during the rebuild.  :-\

Cheers, Kev

We got their Classic Cadillac out this week-end.

We had a great forecast weather wise, so around 10:30am Saturday, the Fleetwood left the garage. We cruised our way from Tin Can Bay through to Gympie, where I had thought about grabbing us a milkshake each at Hell Town Hot Rods. Holy Crap, the place was full of late model cars, so with parking limited, we kept moving. (Besides, I didn’t want any late model car germs getting near our classic)

The Bruce Highway made for a smooth ride to the Sunshine Coast where we thought we might surprise my engine guy with a visit.
Keep in mind, he’s pretty busy and works NEARLY EVERY SATURDAY.
We pulled in for a big surprise….. friggin surprise all right…he wasn’t there. PMSL.

Being right on the coast of the Pacific Ocean is nice, but thousands of others had thought of the same thing, so we turned tail and headed for the mountains.

At the base of the mountains in Woombye, we stopped at a quaint little park and had some sandwiches and coffee milk for lunch on the picnic tables. (Last decade, we use to live about 4 miles away)

Leaving Woombye, we meandered through to Palmwoods, home of Rick’s Diner where we caught up with the Cadillac Club last month. Rick’s was packed with lots of bikes and classic cars. One bloke in a 66 Mustang was looking for a park….. good luck with that mate.
The Fleetwood was purring along and then we began the climb up a steep, narrow road to arrive in the heart of Montville.
Not too many people are aware of this sneaky little road, most don't know it exists.

The engine loved the climb, these engines, truly are torque monsters.
Montville has a little bit of a German Village feel to it. Lots of tourists here too, but there always is.

From Montville, we made our way along the top of the Blackall Range, giving us numerous opportunities to view the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean.
I think the Fleetwood even cast an eye over the ocean, looking to see if Los Angeles (Her previous home)  was visible. but it’s a big mass of water the separates the two counties.

All too soon, we arrived in Mapleton and while I would’ve loved to go via the Obi Obi road, but it’s got about a 1 mile of dirt. So, we descended the other way, taking a short steep descent, then leveling out a bit before descending again and another plateau and then the third decent into Nambour. Here, we hooked a left and made our way out through Yandina to Belli Park for a photo opportunity.
I’ve known about a road called Fleetwood Lane and I just had to get a picture. Not easy either, as the sign is in a crap spot, but we did our best.

From here, we went back out to the main highway and headed for home, arriving back home just on 4pm.

The Fleetwood ate up the miles with ease. (about 210 miles for day)
We managed to vary the engine revs with lots of different situations and the motor now has 540 miles on it.
I’ll give the car a few more miles locally today as I’m chasing 600 miles/1,000 klm, and then next Saturday, I can drop the oil and change the filter and pass a spanner over everything to make sure all is good.

The overall wash up of the day was, the Fleetwood performed flawlessly, she handled everything from cruisy highway miles to twisty steep roads with the best of manners.
Yesterday’s drive, really made the hard work of the past 4 months’ worth it.
We had rock and roll music playing all the way, we got thumbs up everywhere we went and we just flat out, enjoyed using our Classic Cadillac.

I hope I haven’t bored you guys to death with this story. If you google some of the spots I’ve mentioned, you can give yourself a geography lesson of what’s what in Australia.

Cheers, Kev

Hi Kev

Nice story! Good to hear that everything is good with your motor.
I just spun a rod bearing - have to rebuild the engine. Maybe next spring I will be able to write a similar story too!

Cheers,
Nicolas

OK Nils, lets see if I can get my head around this photo posting thingy.

Picture #1, This my 53 year old Fleetwood and my 55 year old wife.
Picture #2, Pretty cool huh, our car has a road named after it.
Picture #3, I'm pretty happy with the under hood area now. I know the hood insulation material isn't the correct stuff, but I reckon it looks better anyway.
Picture #4, This shows the fusible link we've fitted to the car. Whilst the car has been fitted with a new late model fuse box, this fusible link is the fail safe in the event of a major short circuit. It will just melt the blue bit and shut down power. The battery cable of course, would still have current to the starter, but everything else becomes disabled.

Now I can go back and edit the text.

Good luck with you engine rebuild Nicolas. Take ya time, seek good advice and you'll be fine.

Gorgeous car! I love the interior of those years. So nicely appointed.

Where did you buy this fusible link?
My 68 should have a few too but all are missing.

Best regards,

Mate, I've got a semi  retired Sparky who lives about 100 metres down the road and he supplied it for me. Its rated at 70 amps.
Funny thing is, when he fitted the new fuse box back in Feb., he spent around 5 hours upside down under the dash to solder all the new connections.
Because his back was over the sill/rockers while he was there, he buggered up his 70 year old back (the rest of him is 70 as well  ;).

So, from that point on, now he only does stuff he can do standing up........ I think  the 64 broke him.  :-\

After 675 miles/1086 klm, the Fleetwood got its first oil and filter change on the motor.

Bit of a "once over" on every nut and bolt I could get to, you know, just to be sure its all good.
Pretty happy with myself today.....  :)

The Fleetwood is clocking them up slowly. We had to go to Brisbane yesterday as I wanted to take my 94 year old Mum to lunch. The Fleetwood overhangs the parking bays by about 3 feet at the club, so we took the Jeep for the day.

A bit of good news too, I've been shown a loophole in the PhotoBucket armour, so for the time being, all the photos are back up if anyone missed the first couple of pages before PB changed everything around.  ;D

I just love taking my Cadillac to these small parking bays, to show people that they should make their parking bays suitable for all cars, and not just the tiny ones.   Plus, mine with the Continental Kit, plus the Tow Bar bring it out to exactly 6 Metres long.

Love parking it in the Supermarket Car Parks as well.   When the management complain, I just reply, well, there are longer Cadillacs.   This one is below normal Cadillac size.

I was more concerned one of the old farts would run into it. (then I'd have to kill them.)

Some of those oldies heading for the pokies lose touch and cant focus on driving or parking.
I did however, manage to get permission to park the Fleetwood in a gated section next time we go down there.

Just got to ring ahead and let them know.

Don't ask.... don't get.  :)

We took the Fleetwood to Greazefest 2017 yesterday. Fantastic day out for us and the new motor now has over a 1,000 trouble free miles on it over the past 6 or 7 weeks.
We covered 310 miles (520km) in the day yesterday, :o so pretty happy with my work.
Left home at 6am and returned at 6pm, car ran fantastic, although we did have the wipers on for the last hour to home, but we needed the rain, so all good.
The wife and I hit the dance floor a couple of times, so she was pretty happy. we strolled around, checking out everybody's cars.
Hundreds of cars on site too, nearly everyone attending was "dressed" for the occasion, bands were pumping.
Weather was just magnificent, a perfect winters day in Queensland... Australia.

To me, this is what owning a Cadillac is all about, maintain/restore it, keep it nice and get it out and use it, enjoy it, wear it out and then do it all again.

Some of you will cringe when you see ZOMBIE, but its got to be the most evil looking Cadillac to ever grace a highway. ..... Enjoy

After 675 miles/1086 klm,

This a very addictive thing, driving a 64 Fleetwood.

Now at 1,230/1,980 Klm now.
I'm always finding an excuse to drive the bloody thing. Yesterday, we took a run to Helltown Hot Rods for burger n shake for lunch.
Good food too and lots of it and a milkshake filled all the way to the top. (not the first time we've been here)

Oh well, I've worse  things to be addicted to.

Hi Kevin
I congratulate to a very nice car and a successful rebuild engine. I have read your posts with big interest because of several reasons. One is the fact that my car is a copy of yours, a Fleetwood with same color and interior, another not so good thing is that the engine need some new parts. When I took it apart I found three pistons with same damage as in yours. Now when looking for new parts I'm considering custom pistons with slightly increased dish volume to lower the compression to 10:1. Have you noticed any detonation problems, is premium gas still available in your country?
Regards
Jan

Jan,

Thanks for the interest you have in the car and the good taste you have to own the same thing.  :D (Post a pic mate)

These engines are torque monsters and that goes a long way to getting these heavy ol girls moving. When the rebuild took place, everything was checked, right down to running the distributor up and checking the advance etc was all working correctly. We made sure we retained the 10:5 to 1 compression.

If you think about it, my car covered 124,000 miles or 200,000 klm, so 10:5 to 1 wasn't the issue, or it would've been getting a rebuild long before.
You have to return to the beginning and determine why something failed and then sort the original problem.

The detonation my car suffered, began with the head gasket starting to go between the centre two cylinders which was most likely caused by overheating.
When the car arrived in OZ, it had already been fitted with a new water pump and an aluminum radiator, so its fair to assume the engine may have copped some excess heat, which is a prime candidate for a blown or partially blown heat gasket. (that was an educated guess, but a pretty good one)

I only use 95 or 98 octane fuel in the car (our crap stuff is 91 here) and I've had no issue with detonation. Keep in mind though, you can't always hear detonation either.

The other thing in the cars favour, is I don't flog it either, but having said that, I don't nurse it either..... I just drive it.

My advice, use quality bits and seek out good people to have around you during the rebuild. As I stated way back, I had a friend do the rotating assembly for me, and then I did the remainder myself and installed it all.

Sure, I could've done the rotating assembly myself, but its been 23 years since I've done one, so I chose to seek help.

Good luck and you'll be very happy with 10:5 to 1....... ;D

YESTERDAY'S UPDATE..... The Air Cond System:

After fluffing around with stuff, checking and double checking the vacuum lines and finally being ready, we re-gassed the system and ended up with 6.5 degrees of air coming out of the vents. (very happy)

Kevin
Nice to hear that detonation isn't an issue, I'm still worried, if I need to deck the block and clean up the surface of the heads its easy to end up with 11:1. So to be on the safe side I'm considering forged pistons.

Not too much work going on with the 64 these days, just getting it out and enjoying some Cadillac ownership.
(6,500 miles in 12 months, even with it off the road for 3 months while I did the engine)

I have been treating the front door timber panels with O'Cedar wood treatment. Still a long way to go to match the dash and rear timber trims, but a massive improvement over how it looked 12 months ago when the car arrived.

It's funny ya know, for the first 2 or 3 months, I thought I was flogging a dead horse.
Then one day I looked and thought...holy crap, this is starting to work.

Oh well, once a week, it gets a fresh coating.....

Beutiful work!
All of it!
Doing much the same on #1. A makeover.
I too will be removing at least the intake and heads because this engine was rebuilt 30 years ago but never turned over because the rebuilder, pasted away.
I've looked in the cylinders with a bore scope and dont feel comfortable with what i see besides the engine not wanting to turn.
Im going to pull down the top even if i do get it rotated to clean the cylinders and pistin tops and make sure the rings have not left a mark.
Very nice work on your brightening!

I've been sussing out our build sheet and this morning, I looked to see, just for the hell of it, what model followed us off the assembly line.

OUR CAR: 1964 Cadillac Fleetwood, (106761) Aspen White, turquoise interior.

NEXT CAR: 1964 Cadillac Fleetwood, (106762) Aspen White, light blue interior.

How friggin cool would it be to have a photo of those two cars, end to end coming off the assembly line, Man o man, I'd be prepared to sell off one of the wife's kidneys to get a photo that for the file.

The two front door timber panels were really hammered by the sun. By using O'Cedar wood polish, one a week for a year, they are slowly returning to a better look. They'll never be perfect, just a lot better.

Still out cruising and using the big ol Fleetwood. Not much else to report, just taking care of regular maintenance and servicing.
In the first photo, you see the results of the first owners interaction with the mail box, right above the word FLEETWOOD.  :(

But, with still approx. 80% of the original paint still in place, i'm just loath to try and dick around with it.
Considering, from 1964 to 2016, the car lived in Southern California, the paint is still doing ok.
Well, I think it is....  8)

Those dings should be "easily" removable because the panel is accessible from behind. Either trough the hood / engine bay or door jam.

Jeepers,

Look into paintless dent removal (PDR) in your area. It's amazing what can be done with some of the specialty tools that are available now. In my area, the price is usually right in line with a body shop that would strip, fix and repaint it.

My AC blower has been making a little noise on and off. I thought, it might have been a bit of leaf litter or a twig in there until the other day.
It sounded like a bearing in the blower motor was going to lunch and doing it quickly.

OK, we're making progress.

I found, if I stood on my head, tied my left arm behind my back, stuck my tongue out until it nearly touched my nose,  I could just get enough room to fit my chubby body in there and get the blower motor out.

Its a "Made in China" unit from Napa that doesn't look too old. The bearings are fine.

Its the actual fan itself. It looks like a mini washing machine tub with a locating boss in the centre. The location boss has come loose from the fan itself. Its a pressed unit, so nothing really to tighten... as such.
I'm going to have a go at securing it again by knurling the two back together until they become tight again.

The fan cage is mated to an alloy boss that slips over the shaft with a tiny nut on top.

I've managed to knurl the original pressed unit to be a pretty tight fit again.

Tested the fan before refitting.... ha ha ha.
I was holding it in my hand and just as I tested it I thought, I wonder if these things have much snort.

Friggin thing nearly took off, missed my face by inches, but there was no way I was dropping it.

Refitted and working quiet as a mouse walking on tissue paper now.

The fan motor itself looks relatively new, certainly only 3 or 4 years old would be my guess.

If it plays up again, i know what to order before tearing everything tearing it all out again.
Not the best job to do on a hot day, but at least my Air Conditioning is working again.

Oh, I also found the main air tube that comes off the blower motor was quite loose too. I slipped some thin rubber strips in the joins and tightened all that up again too.

All in all, pretty happy, all fixed and only a labour cost.... no parts.
When I gassed the air cond unit well over a year ago, some were bleating it wasn't the right gas...etc.
It still runs fine on the gas we used.

Geez, I was on a roll now.

My 6 way power seats, don't go forward or back, never have since I've owned the car. Other directions were ok and the seat is in the perfect spot for me, so no big rush to fix.

Maybe 8 months ago, I grabbed a good second hand power seat gearbox from Jason Edge. The reason being, if I undo everything to fix it and need to get parts, it becomes a second job or a much longer down time. The joys of having a Cadillac on the other side of the planet.

So, I get ready to remove the little 6 way seat gearbox. When I went to lift the seat up to gain access to the bolts, it now doesn't go in any direction.
I had no power going to the seat motor/gearbox thingy.
I popped the switch assembly off the door trim and it appears I have no power going to the seat controller either.

Ran a test light over the fuses.... all good. Everything else on the switch block works fine as well

I seam to recall, our cars can break the wires in the door jambs.
Checked it all out and has a look.

The rubber cover was in great condition, off she came and low and behold, there is a broken red wire.

Yee-haa.... I haven't been this excited since I was a little girl.
I squealed, I jumped around and then got stuck into fixing the broken red wire.

Another white one was a bit Howdy Doody, so did that as well.

Battery lead back on, ignition on and NOTHIN.... still no seat movement.

Shit... shit shit shit. until I remembered, I did disconnect the seat motor harness connector when I was going to pull the motor out anyway, before deciding to wait until I found the lack of power issue.

Harness on, power on and the seat goes up and tilts.

Still doesn't go forwards or back, but that's cool, now I can set about doing the motor.

I also found the vacuum lines were a bit second hand too, so I'll slip into town and get some bits for that.

We'll be back on the black stuff again before the week is out.

Ok, power seat time.

With the mounting bolts out, I've tipped the seat back and zip tied a car stand. sitting on a square of cardboard, to it on each side so it doesn't fall on my silly head.

Well... Well.. Well, some rough nut has already had a go at the seat. The back cable drives for the front and rear movement were disconnected, a good reason it wouldn't go forward or backwards.
Then I notice, the main base for the motor drive, gearbox etc is zip tied to the seat base.... rough pricks.

I've taken out the gearbox and the F and R drive shaft is seized in the housing, so that's the next reason it didn't work.
I had a really good seat gearbox drive i'd got off Jason Edge last year, so goes straight in and i'll sort the old one over the coming months.

I have a good selection of "old car nuts and bolts" and found two matching bolts that look factory and remounted the main bracket back to the seat base for a start.

I've dropped off every cable drive one by one and 5 out of 6 are free and easy.
One was slightly tight, but movable.

Lots of WD40 and a cordless drill on a light setting with the cable mounted lengthwise to the floor. Its freeing up nicely. (it did turn already, just a bit tight)
I let it sit overnight until the WD40 had dripped off the bottom.

With everything reconnected, bolted up, buttoned up and locked down.... its the moment of truth.

We now have, a fully operational 6 way power seat.  :)

Based on the fact we can now adjust the seat correctly, my wife will have her first drive of the car tomorrow now.
I'm too sure she's all that keen, but I would like her to have a drive.

Time will tell.....

Couple of pics of it during the work.
Its not like it was brain surgery or splitting the atom, but it made me feel pretty good.

Even though, my clock is correct twice a day, she's coming out Friday to be sent away.

Hopefully, it'll correct all day after some loving.

Life gets in the road sometimes, the clock went to the guy this morning...ha ha ha, can't rush these things.

Just a couple of random pics of the engine bay taken a few weeks back.

It's been a wee bit over a year, and not a sound from our Cadillac Fleetwood on the other side of the world.

I've always lusted after a 69 Cadillac, to replace memories of the lite brown Sedan DeVille my father had back when it was 2 years old. And I sure wouldn't mind a '57!!! Oh yeah, I just bought one in Wisconsin, and now how to sneak over there so I don't get arrested crossing the state borders with this ridiculous virus.

So what progress is there on our party barge Cadillac Fleetwood? I myself have a 65 Electra 225 Survivor, a 68 Olds 98 Survivor, 65 Grand Prix Survivor, a 78 Eldorado Biarritz last Edition, and 3 409 Chevy clone muscle cars...

Ha ha ha, the Fleetwood on the other side of the world is going just fine. LOL  :)

It had a major service back in Feb. (by me)
I'd found these markings years ago, but still very clear to read.
I finally decided to take a pic of 'em.
It also had a birthday on the 25th of March too.
While retaining approx. 80% of her original paint, she still shines like a star.
It was out doing a 200 plus KLM round trip to drop off some essentials to my elderly Mum on Good Friday.

Good to hear!!! I just yesterday bot a 1991 Chrysler  LeBaron convertible.  I believe it's wearing it's original paint, 84xxx miles, very rare combination of 3.0 V6 5 speed. Needs an AC compressor and a nasty wind whistle addressed from the drivers' window.

I needed a commuter car for 500km trips to visit my seniorita, and what better than a Malaise Era convertible???

And my '57 Cadillac awaits in Wisconsin...

You can never have too many huh.

Good on ya.  ;)

I started to polish the Fleetwood yesterday, in an effort to keep that paint shining.
Spent an hour on the underside of the trunk lid, the water drip rail areas around the trunk.

I'll polish the engine bay today and hopefully get that finished.  ???

Then its all 4 door jambs..... by then, if my fingers aren't bleeding too much, i'll start on the outside panels.
I reckon, in around 4 days, i could be ready to start on the insides.

Hmmm, maybe I should do the trim before the outside.... would make sense.
