Hi from the UK,

Does anyone happen to know the correct part number for the Universal joints on a 1949 model 62? Either Moog or SKF would be very helpful. I've looked all over the Web but can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Cheers,

According to my 1955 Master Parts List, the Cadillac part number for the '49 universal joint depends on the engine number.  (The engine number in '49 is the last 5 digits of the car's serial or VIN number which is on the front right side of the block just in front of the right cylinder head and on the right side of the frame looking straight down from the generator.)

For Series 62 before engine number 62952, both the front and rear universal joint part numbers are 142 4820.  For cars after engine number 62951, the front universal joint part number is 145 6525 and the rear universal joint part number is 146 3259.

Of course, this doesn't help you with Moog or SKF.  However, there are currently on Ebay several universal joint kits advertised as being for '49 Cadillacs.  They seem to be correct looking at their photos.  Below is one but there were several others:

Here is another from Rock Auto, a well-known vendor who would probably ship to the UK:

I have a Nos Neapco with 50-51 Cadillac written on it with no part # on the box.

Measures 3 13/16" between the cross yokes.

$25 + shipping.

As others have pointed out, the Master Chassis book shows the universal joint was changed starting with engine #62952 (1949 - 61 & 62).  The pre-change version is a 4LWT (double wing) configuration and is applicable to 1940 - 48 series 62 (among others) and early 1949. I don't know what the post-change version is but according to gmpartswiki that part number is applicable to 1954-56 Oldsmobile.

FWIW: From my research notes of 20 years ago and a very old U Joint catalog, the (old) interchange numbers for the pre-change version are:

Precision 536
Spicer 5-3000X
GKN HS530
Alloy 1711
Caterpillar 5D9153

Hope this helps in your search

A couple of years ago i needed u-joints for my 37,i was able to cross the OEM numbers over to a locally available joint,i got them at a local truck supply store, they are still used in some commercial applications?,they were about 1/3 of the cost of getting them from a specialty supplier, and they were in stock too.Dont be scared to try one of the truck dealers for them if you have a number a good parts guy can cross them over for you,all the numbers seem to share the same sequences?. Good Luck.

RockAuto has them if you look at the 49 (SKFUJ536) first version listing for almost to cheap a price.  If they ever get all the interchanges in the computers and get the sourcing down to a small number so you don't have 4 shipments to buy 10 items they will put everyone out of business.

Here in the Atlanta area there are several shops which specialize in driveshaft (and leaf spring) repair.  As Harvey B pointed out, I believe nowadays the majority of their customers are truck owners since they are mostly rear wheel drive.

The last time I needed a universal joint repair on my '49, I removed the driveshaft, took it to one of these shops and they had in stock or obtained (I never asked) the correct u-joint kit and installed it.  It may be that there is not much variation in
u-joints and that the type of u-joint used on a '49 is still used today on certain vehicles.
