I noticed a leaky wheel cylinder the other day while changing the u joints. This  prompted a  decision to change all 4 after finding fluid in very dirty condition. I pulled front wheels off and am in process of pulling drums and bearings. My question is, has anyone tried to convert the bearings to tapered roller? I understand this series is hard to find bearings for should mine show excessive wear. Thanks in advance. I'm hoping the Napa cylinders listed here work out OK .I should have them Friday.

I have had quite a few of these apart and have not seen a problem with the front bearings.  They are extremely durable.  The ones you have to worry about are the rear wheel bearings.  If they have not been changed they fail.  They are an early sealed bearing and seals were just not perfected yet in 39 plus/minus.  You will want to change them.  Not cheap but failure is very expensive.

Brad,

Noting your response above.....My 1940 LaSalle shop manual says that the rear bearings are "self lubricating" and need not be repacked, every 12,000 miles, like the front bearings. I would assume mine are the same as the 39 Cadillac?  Of course any mechanical thing eventually wears out, self lubricating or not.  Do you have any idea as to the life of the rear bearings...mileage wise?

Thanks,

Bob R.

Always replace the rear axle bearings on these vintage of cars no matter what unless you know it has already been done.  It isn't the miles.  The seals fail.  They just didn't have the materials for the seals that we do now.  You are lucky compared to the 39-75.  Yours are cheap to buy.  The much bigger ones on the 75 series are not cheap but the results from failure can be much more costly than the bearings.

Thanks Brad,

Can you name a source for the rear bearings?  P.M. If you prefer.

Thanks,

Bob

This is for the small series cars, not the 75 series.  The bearing number is 514003.  Along with lots of other places if you plug this number into parts search at RockAuto it will bring up several brands to choose from.  The part numbers for various bearings and seals are listing in the 1940 Class 5 and 10 authenticity manuals.

[/I gave Olcar Bearings a call today. George had  my front bearings and my rear axle bearings and seal material. He is a pleasure to talk to and order from. Excellent source for bearings. I figured it was a good time for a few "while your in there". Thanks for the bearing advice Brad!

How the heck did I get Brads quote mixed in with my post! Oh well the farm is calling I guess! Anyways Olcar had my axle bearings. Surprised since hardly anyone carries parts for 75 -90 series it seems. George is great to talk to. Highly recommend.

You must have clicked on 'Insert Quote' Alex, and started typing right after Brads last word instead of a line down after the word (Quote). ;D     Stand in line at the farm queue.
