My 75 De Ville must have been owned at one time by someone very heavy. When I grip the wheel to get in, if I pull hard, the wheel will tilt down as if I released the handle to purposely get the wheel to move. I figured there must be some sort of positive latching system that has been worn down or broken that allows this to happen. I don't think it's a safety issue as this is the only abnormality I've noticed and I do have to pull moderately hard to get the wheel to slip out. Has anyone ever had this problem and does anyone have ideas of how this might be fixed? Removing the wheel and all seems a bit much for this type of repair but any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Dr,
Most tilt wheels have "some" play in them between steps. How much wear yours has, or if something is definitely not right, is up to you. If you pull hard enough on a tilt wheel in an older vehicle, it does move a little. Think of the wear factor also if someone was abusive towards it, or was constantly playing with it. I would never pull my body weight into a car by holding onto the steering wheel anyway. Have it checked out by a knowledgeable mechanic if you feel it's a safety issue.

I learned a long time ago, the most healthy way to enter a car is rear end first, then swing your legs around. Less strain and wear and tear on your back.
