'48 346 ci engine in a 1937

Will a 1948 346 bolt straight over to a 1937 Series 75?  I need to know pretty quick before the motor goes away.

If you are replacing the '37 with the '48 you can swap some of the parts but if you don't have the '37 it takes a little mixing and matching as Steve mentioned, but not a big deal.    Harry

I have a working (kind of) original 37 engine in the car, but 3 cylinders are super low compression.  I have a line on a rebuilt 346 from a 48 still on the engine stand from the rebuild in the late 80s.  So are the swaps things that are on the 37 currently?  like fan bearings, dampeners, flywheel, etc?

You will need the complete lower part of the 48 engine to start with including bell housing, flywheel, all clutch parts etc. Nice to have the later starter or you will have to make an adjustment to the block castings to get the old type in the later bellhousing. You will need the front balancer, and it should be the solid one, not the hollow type used on the Auto.  Mix and match all the other parts to suit.

     Do I remember a shift rod that comes out of the front of the 37 transmission that needs a corresponding hole in the bell housing to receive that rod when the transmission is in that gear?   Or am I thinking of something else?

Your right there Jim. It's been a while since I did mine. One of the many small details I have forgotten. I recall I had an engineer mill a small section out.

Another detail with the bell housing is location of dowel pins. More than likely the '48 engine had a hydro trans. If that is the case the dowel pins have to be relocated. The rear of the block is drilled for either hydro or std.   Harry

Somewhere I read ( Doug Housten ? )  that in 41 the blocks were drilled for either a manual or for a Hydramatic transmission but latter on
( 42 or 46 ? )  the blocks were drilled for both to keep things simple.

Can anyone verify?  At what point in time did GM start drilling the blocks for either type of transmission ?
