This is the part of the starter that fits in the bell housing.  It can be removed by just taking out the two long bolts on the other end of the starter.  This part was changed from 40 to 41.  I have a good 40 starter that needs to be changed to a 41.  The ideal part would come from a trashed 41 and newer starter that is of no value.  The part I am looking for can be in any condition.  The only wear part is the bushing in the end which can be easily replaced.

Hi Brad.
What changed with the starters? I ask because I replaced my 38 starter a couple of years ago with a 41 starter and can't remember any modifications I may have done, but then, I forget a lot of things. :P

41 through 48 starters will interchange going backwards but 38 to 40 will not fit the 41 to 48.  The bell housing was different with the introduction of the hydramatic.  The difference is in the orientation of the mounting bolts in relation to the solenoid.  The difference is almost undetectable unless side by side.  The difference is probably only half of the bolt diameter.  I discovered also that the arm that moves the bendix is also different between the two.  They both fit but it is impossible to adjust the pinion stop point correctly.

I ran into that problem trying to swap a '48 starter to a earlier engine. Brad, I will check to see if I have a parts starter tomorrow.     Harry

Brad,
If I can get the starter from my wrecked 41 I would like to install it on the 40 LaSalle. From the previous posts I think you are saying the 41 starter complete will fit with no modifications.  I that correct?
The 41 has been totaled, will be sold by the salvage yard(Copart) in the next 4-6 weeks, and I hope they will have the buyer contact me.
I will send photos of the LaSalle door jamb whenever my computer returns from the shop. this IPad and I don't get along very well.

Bob,
In accordance with the rigid Illinois titling laws it will have a salvage title, and I really didnT want it back at this stage of my life anyway. It is fixable, with everything back of the cowl perfect except for the steering wheel and horn ring. Whoever buys it may elect to fix it or part it, but if rebuilt with a salvage title that will have a big effect on resale value.

Bob,
I understand your decision to not retain the car.
I don't wholly agree with your salvage title thoughts. I think all states now require an salvage title be issued for a totaled vehicle. However... many vehicles are out there without salvage titles from incidents that happened before the laws were changed. A properly repaired 41 Cadillac should be no problem. A 2015 ATS flood car should be avoided. I would consider a car like yours much more than a clean title like car from the salt belt with a paper thin frame. I personally don't feel a salvage title means a big price difference.
Copart does NOT share any information.
