Title: 1959 Cadillac 50th Anniversary interesting/funny/unusual photos
Post by: Tony on May 18, 2009, 08:59:40 AM
In its glorious 50th year it would be great to see some interesting, unusual, funny or just weird pictures of any 59 Cads.
Or even just pictures of you and your 59 parked somewhere nice on a Sunday afternoon.

I will get it rolling with a picture of me and four x 59 Eldorado Biarritzs in one room at one time.

Thanks

Tony

Good idea!  Here's a couple of photos.  The first is a great original photo taken in 1960 - note the rear hubcap is already missing .....  The second, well, perhaps this '59 just needed a rest.

Last weekend at a local car show at the Tex-Ark Antique Auto Museum in Texarkana, a black 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood showed up. In continuing honor of the great 59 Cads, I have asked Carla to post my picture here of this car. Also to honor the GM wagons of 1959, I have taken a couple of pictures of 1/25 scale models of a 59 Cadillac ambulance, the 1959 Buick Texan (a one off vehicle with a sunroof), and of a 1959 Chevrolet Nomad. GM was truly in its heyday with the 59s! Charles D. Barnette

Having fun with 1959's, 50 years on!

The attached photos are from the Cadillac LaSalle Club of Australia (Western Australian Region) meet last Sunday at a very nice place called Jackadder Lake, Woodlands.  Daughter Jean and friend Veronica had a great time in the '59 Caddie convertible!  The second photo could be summarised by saying that there is still interest in "taking a look under the hood....".  The man on the left (in the stripped shirt) happened to be walking by and just had to have a look as well!

Title: Reflections on the 59 Cadillac
Post by: Charles D. Barnette on May 20, 2009, 05:20:22 PM
When one views the 59 Cadillac-there is no middle ground. You either love it or hate it! I for one love them. I saw my first 59 Cadillac when I was 10 years old while riding on the local bus one Saturday morning enroute to my weekly piano lesson. The backup lenses were so huge, the bus driver thought they were headlamps and made the statement that he could not figure out if the car was coming toward him or away from him. The car we were looking at was a yellow 59 Cad Fleetwood. Later I saw the car parked near my schoolyard where to me (like my dad's 59 Buick) it appeared to be a rocket ready to blast off to Mars. The Fleetwood was my favorite 59, because it had the most chrome on it compared to the other 59 models. My dad's 59 Buick was a 4 door flat-top. I have often wondered since the top of the line Buick-the Electra- had a flat-top 4 door available why didn't the Cadillac Fleetwood also come in a flat-top model? I also remember reading early in my legal career about a case where the plaintiff accidentally impaled himself on a 59 Cad rear fin while the plaintiff was running as a pedestrian! The 59 Cad fin was as big as fins got and signaled the decrease and eventual deletion of the ornamental design. You have to admit however that the 59 Cad still turns heads today when it passes by! Like Charles, I began my fascination with '59s at a very early age.  I also acted on it at a very early age, buying a really nice '59 CDV when I was 13 for $350 with money I saved from my paper route.  I planned to keep it until I was old enough to drive it, but I learned the trans was bad and knew I couldn't afford that on my paper boy budget, so I sold it a few months later and bought a '60 Impala flat top.  But I never got over the '59, and not long after I was out on my own in the working world, I bought my '59 60S.  Drove it home on Xmas eve, 1984.  A couple of years later, met my wife because she heard I was restoring a finned Cad and she like them, too. Nearly 25 years later, we're all still together.  I would like to own a flat top, and have also wondered why the Fleetwood wasn't available as a "6039."  I have a spare set of Fleetwood trim.  Maybe I'll make my own 6039 some day.  In the meantime, here's a pinup.

Charles,

I wonder if someone helped themselves to the fender skirts and emblems, or did the hotel pull them "for safety?"

Post by: Charles D. Barnette on May 21, 2009, 11:23:04 AM
The fender skirts were in the trunk. The emblems and taillight lenses were gone. Plus it appears to me that the top was cut off to make the car into a convertible. I just know I had the compelling notion to rescue her from the prison of room 134. Shall we start a free the "Caddie" campaign? Charles D. Barnette-let me also add here that what is so appealing about the flat-top look on these cars is that the top appears to be simply floating on top of the car.

GM would have done a better job but I've never liked the air scoops on the '59 Fleetwood quarter panels. If it's possible to make a '59 more gaudy, those things do it.

The coupes are the cleanest looking '59s in my opinion.

I think the "6039"  picture is pretty amusing, although since it was based on the Fleetwood windshield, the windows are a little too high. I thik the flat tops used the lower coupe windshield. Yes, the fake airscoops are ridiculous and make the car look gaudier- but that was the point; GM had to distinguish the 60S and justify its higher price, so in a year of total styling excess they just added more.  I actually had someone come up to me at a show a few years ago and say "Nice car, but why did you put all that extra junk on the sides?"  I explained that he needed to ask GM that question.

The first photo in reply 29 shows the taillights that look like they are made out of those red plastic drinking glasses they serve you at Pizza Hut.

I was wondering if you took those two pictures and if so, when?

They sure do look like Pizza Hut drinking glasses!  No, I did NOT take these photos.  That one, I believe, is from a travel Web site about Syria. The other was taken by a neighbor of mine while on vacation in Damascus (note the trunk lid "ELDORADO" molding attached across the front of the hood!)

The B&W photo is of a custom job by Pinin Farina, supposedly built on the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham chassis. My guess it was just a empty body shell, like the "Jacqueline" coupe, mounted on a simple tubular frame with four '59 wheels.

Title: A 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood 4 Door Convertible?
Post by: Charles D. Barnette on May 26, 2009, 11:55:59 AM
Again of course there was no such animal. But that didn't stop the Japanese Co. (Bandai) from making tin 11&1/2 inches models of this in 1959. Carla will post my pictures of same which I think are appropriate for this thread of unusual pictures of the 59 Cadillac. The 1959 Cadillac is probably the Cadillac that has the most scale models of it ever produced. It is easy to find a 1959 Cadillac model in almost any usual model scale. Since GM did make a 4 door Cadillac convertible in 1941, should GM have made the 59 Cadillac into a 4 door convertible as well? Never mind I think I already know your answers. But it does grow on one the longer you look at it. Also you have to admit that it makes for a really nice collectible scale model for my collection! Charles D. Barnette

While waiting for Carla to post the 4 door convertible version of the 59 Cad., I will have her also post a picture of 3 red 59 Cadillac scale models representing as many body styles and as many shades of red. Included is 1. (up top in the middle) a bright 1/24 scale red 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille by Jada Toys of California, 2. (on the left) a less detailed "metallic flake" red smaller scale 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible made in China, and 3. (on the right) a red Series 62 convertible 1/24 scale by the Danbury Mint. These prove the point about the variety and abundance of 1959 Cadillac scale models available. Charles D. Barnette

Ever wondered what it is like to ship a car in a metal box from one side of the planet to the other? You open the doors to the sea container, its like opening a big present, and there she is in all her glory (hopefully!).
Its such a tight fit you have to crawl across the bonnet and slide in through the window to get into the car so you can (again really hopefully) start her up and drive her out.
Here are some possible captions for the picture:
"I thought it would have been in better condition that this"
"Seriously, what was I thinking"
"Can I send it back?"
"Okay lets drop the top and blast off for the best ride ever!!!!!!!"

Thanks

So about this time last year - beginning June in fact, I along with my other half Sam, my sister and dad go to the Ladies Day at Epsom Racecourse in Surrey, England - my dad lived at that time a stones throw from the track in a place called Burgh Heath so it was convienient to park my now sold yellow 59 series 62 convertible at my dads house while we went and got drunk at the races. Around midday the following day - a Saturday - me and Sam return to my dads t get the 59 - and I should say, the car is eye popping - restored by Mark Lease in Oregon and NM, KH wires, black top etc. So I drive to the end of my dads road only to be stopped by a cop on a motorcycle - as I look down the hill, I see this Bentley limousine coming up the road towards me - as it gets close the old dear in the back does a proper 'Rubber Neck of the 59 - swings all the way round to check it out! My missus gets out of her car behind and comes up to me... "Did you see that?" she says. Needless to say, it was Her Majesty The Queen on her way to enjoy a day at the Gee Gee's.....

Next up on on this thread of unusual 59 Cad pictures is the Ecto-1 1959 Cadillac Ghostbusters vehicle 1/18 scale model made by Kenner of Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988. The hard plastic vehicle model itself was  made in Mexico. The Ghost Figure (being reeled in by the Ghost Claw) was made in Hong Kong. The real vehicle was seen in the 1984 movie by Columbia Pictures and was seen in The Real Ghostbusters TV Show in 1986. Carla will have fun posting shortly pictures of this 59 Cad model complete with the "swivel blaster seat"! I am glad her grandson is not around-there still is a kid left in all of us. Charles D. Barnette-the 1959 Cad lives on forever in scale models. Have you also noticed that the 59 Cadillacs have become through the years a truly international by-product?

There are a lot of home made ones floating around out there - just like home made General Lees.

One was even misrepresented a while back at one of the major auctions. Anyway, I think the second photo is the correct one.

Is it the same one as this at VOLO?

Ghost Busters:
If you watch both movies they revamped the car for the second movie, adding the black/yellow along the sides, the neon sign board and a few other things, that's why you'll see 2 different looking cars, though no doubt some people try to pass theirs off as the movie car, that 1 ad said 3 cars were made for universal/movie. Maybe they started with a different car for the second movie as not to alter the part 1 car, at the beginning of part 2 the car is really run down then they re-do it.

Also if you Notice the car is Ecto 1, them sometimes you see the part 2 car referred to as Ecto-1A

I have a bunch of the Ghost Busters cars in my collection, the Johnny Lightning series were they had them in several different colors, the Ertl die cast model, the cartoon cars, a soap dish car, etc.

Theirs currently a 1969 Ghost Busters car on eBay. last week their was a 1962 & a 1973.

Not to stray off the 1959 subject, like Charles said 1959 is the car everyone immortalizes in models, I have tons of 1959 scale models as well, from Hotwheels in every color, Johnny Lightning Ghost Busters, Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, plus note pads, key chains, calculators, phone, clock radio, etc, etc.

Here is the 1959 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe in a beautiful ad showing the car at the Waldorf - Astoria Hotel.  These original Cadillac Ads always included beautiful fashions.  In this ad Cadillac states that the three furs (worn by as many women) were furnished by Revillon.  The Series 62 Coupe was the lowest priced 59 Cadillac, but it still has the beauty and elegance to be at home at the Waldorf - Astoria.

Title: Re: 1959 Cadillac Cyclone
Post by: Charles D. Barnette on May 31, 2009, 05:23:13 PM
This has been a great thread concentrating on the great 59 Cadillacs in honor of their 50th anniversary. It appears that tomorrow will be a black day however for GM. The news reports are that GM will file on Monday bankruptcy under Chapter 11. When that happens a great era will have ended that produced cars like the 59 Cadillac full of luxury, beauty, and grace. There will be alot of people who will lose their jobs, retirement benefits, health benefits, and GM dealerships. Perhaps it will be for the good in the long run for GM to be owned by the US Government (as has been reported); but in the short run, it is going to hurt! Some solace can be had I think by rereading this entire thread when GM was at the top of their game. One car that has to be mentioned here is the 59/60 Cadillac Cyclone show car. The Cyclone sought to emulate jet aircraft fighters-hence the two cones on the front fender had radar. Carla will post tomorrow an interesting picture of the car from my collection of its debut at the 1959 Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.  Strangely the car never appeared at the 59 GM Motorama or the final 1961 GM Motorama (there was no 60 GM Motorama). The picture shows the car (on the racetrack) sitting very high with large fins in the 59 configuration-not sitting low as we know it. Carla will also post three additional pictures of the car in its 1960 configuration where gone are the high fins. A more tailored fin appears similar to the 1961-62 Cadillacs upon which the bottom edge "skeg" fins of Cyclone also appeared. These three pictures were taken by me (one in 1992 at the GM Clark Street plant with top canopy in place and the remaining two at the Cadillac Museum in Warren, Michigan, in 1997). Perhaps these pictures will also give some comfort to us. Charles D. Barnette

Sorry about the mis-labeled first picture on the Cyclone above. However it allowed us to show a special feature of "photo shop", because when first posted above we added a red tint to the picture; when posted a second time with the correct label we removed the red tint. Isn't modern technology wonderful? I do hope these pictures ease the tension of GM filing for bankruptcy on today's date June 1, 2009. Let us hope that today's efforts will save GM! Charles D. Dan, these filmstrips are awesome! I must confess after watching number 6, I was unaware that cruise control was available for the 59 Cadillac. I wonder how many 59 Cadillacs were so equipped? Charles D. Barnette

I am now seeing that cruise control was standard on the 59 Eldorado Brougham, Seville, and Biarritz. But how many other 59 Cadillac models opted for this feature?
Title: Re: 1959 Cadillac 50th Anniversary interesting/funny/unusual photos
Post by: Dan LeBlanc on June 03, 2009, 06:48:16 PM
I think it might be difficult to determine just how many have cruise control if they're anything like the 61's and 62's as it was also available as a dealer installed accessory.  I know that cruise control parts for my 1961 are extremely difficult to find as the 1961 was a 1 year only unit.  1959 and 1960 might be a bit easier and may share components with Chrysler's Autopilot as they were both made by Dana corporation.
Title: Re: 1959 Cadillac Cruise Control Plus My Fantasy
Post by: Charles D. Barnette on June 04, 2009, 06:59:29 PM
I have now consulted what I believe to be the primary reference of information on Cadillacs of the fifties, "Automobile Heritage's  Illustrated Guide to 1950 thru 1959 Cadillac" by Roy A. Schneider. From his book I read that the only 59 Cad body style to have the cruise control feature as standard equipment was the 59 Eldorado Brougham. If that is true, then that only gives us the 99 EBs of 59 plus other 59 Cadillac models special ordered with the feature or those that were possibly dealer added. The feature would be located in the left hand side round pod on the dash as you face the steering wheel which would have either the cruise control feature or a medallion if no cruise control. I suspect only a hand full of 59 Cads had the option. The option was not available to the 59 Buick I am told. I digress to reveal a fantasy of mine of retrieving the 1959 EB chassis that was accidentally dropped in the ocean while loading. According to Mr. Schneider on page 235 of his book as follows: "According to legend, 100 Broughams were to have been completed during the 1959 model run, but one chassis was dropped in the harbor while being loaded thereby reducing the number to 99." The chassis was in the process of being shipped to Italy to receive its Pinin Farina body. Also while I am in my fantasy, I would like to retrieve the green 1959 flat top 4 door Buick that lies at the bottom of the ocean between Cuba and Miami. Some enterprising Cubans a couple of years ago fitted this 59 Buick with a boat bow, pontoons, and propellers powered by the Buick's motor to illegally come to the U.S. The 59 Buick "boat" was promptly intercepted by the US Coast Guard, taking into custody the Cubans, and deliberately sinking the 59 Buick seaworthy "contraption"! They also tried this with a '42 Chevy. It met the same fate. Sank by the Coast Guard in the Straights of Florida.

These are the kind of people we need here. Not the ones with their hands out.

They were sent back home because they never reached U.S soil.

Cruise was certainly not a common option in '59, but over the years I've seen quite a few with it, especially Eldorados and Fleetwoods.  As with most new technology, it trickled down from the top.  If you want a rare car with cruise, when in high school I drove a '60 Chevy Impala flat top with cruise.  The original owner was an engineer with GM's Perfect Circle Division, which built the cruise system, and I was told it was one of only a handful with factory cruise.  By the time I got it, it was pretty beat.  After I graduated, the timing chain broke, and my parents had it junked when I left for college.  At the time it was just an old car; not at all collectible.

Re. cruise control.
I have checked the copy of my car's build sheet that I got from GM archives. There are 27 cars listed on the sheet and 3 had factory fitted cruise control (1 x 62 sedan 6W, 1 x Sedan DeVille 6W, 1 x Eldorado Biarritz). If this part of one day's production is indicative of the whole year (which is probably a big leap) then we are looking at 11% with factory cruise, plus the cars with dealer fitted cruise.
