Title: Engine seriel numbers
Post by: "Cadillac Kid" Greg Surfas 15364 on October 11, 2017, 01:35:26 PM
I know this subject was discussed previously and probably more than once, but I can not find it.  I am looking for the "code" for 472/500 engines with the casting number ending in 5200.  The serial number is just to the (drivers side) left of the casting number and it refers to the division, the factory , the year of manufacture and the last few numbers of the vehicle vin number.  Does anyone have the key to these numbers?
Thanks

What years are you referring to?

Are you needing the code for the casting number or the VIN?

I know that '71 and later had different VIN numbers than '70 & prior.  My VIN is pretty basic.  Just an "F" for convertible, then the vehicle number.

Doesn't it "decode" the VIN in the shop manual?  I recall that it did in my '75 Olds manual.

I haven't a clue about the casting numbers....

Anyone else?

Chriss,
There is a number stamped into the rear of the block to the left (drivers side) of the casting number that tells the year (1970-78(+), the original displacement and then has the last few numbers of the vehicle VIN number.

I don't remember hearing that displacement was a possible thing you could get from a code on these engines.    You hear about a lot of people wanting to know if they have a 472 or 500 and 'they' say you have to measure the stroke or look for the casting number in the crank.   It would be interesting to find out if that info was actually there but not super useful since many of them seem to be hard to read even fresh out of a hot tank.    Out of a dozen or so of these engines I have seen up close myself I would have to say maybe only one of those I could confidently say the full code was readable.   Must have been the high nickel blocks were a little hard for the punch set up they had.  Probably worked fine on nice soft Chev blocks.
