Steve,
I may have a couple in good condition from a spare engine, however, I'm not certain of the year (best guess is 1939).  Also, don't know if they are the three ring version, or 4 and they are in storage in Chico.  I'll be going up there in about a week so can check, but in the mean time, there are a couple of other specs that might help:  What is the piston pin to crown height?  If you have it apart (I assume), what is the weight of an exemplar piston.  A substitute that is too heavy should not be a problem if you know a good automotive machinist.

I don't know, but it would seem that running a 4 ring piston along side a three ring should make little difference in this low compression, low revving engine, provided the compression ratio and the weight are w/in spec.

Problem with that Mark is that Stephen would have to get a full set of 4 ring piston rings just to use only some of them, and I know from experience that the 4 ring early sets are very expensive, also that bottom ring would be running in a section of the bore that has never had any wear, dont like the sound of any of that much.
I may may have a couple Stephen but shipping from England would be prohibitive. Someone in the US can help surly?

Steve [Passmore],
Always good to get a little dose of reality!  Hadn't thought about the issue of where the 4th ring would be running in a used bore.  And you're right, this should be a fairly common item as a fair number of engines have been junked for reasons such as cracked blocks etc., so salvaged pistons should be out there and cheap.

While we are on this topic, do you know when Cadillac switched to 3-ring pistons?

Mark Lowery, CLC#25216

Steve Passmore

Not really sure Mark, 37 and 38 are 4 rings for sure, I junked a 39 engine some years back but dont remember what came out of it. War time engines are all 3 rings so I'd hazard a guess at 41 ish?

That may be the case on domestic cars Jeff but I have to tell you I have two new old stock war time engines and they are 3 rings.
