Ive got a '66 Conv.  Just replaced the coil but didn't have the little transistor.  I may be calling it the wrong thing, but it's a little piece about half the length of a AA battery.  I'm looking for that part.

Any ideas?

That's called the Ballast Resister. You will find them on eBay but you only use them if you have a Resister coil.

How would I know if it is or isn't?  The one I took off had the resistor connected, so I just reconnected the old resistor to the new coil.  I was thinking ti would make sense to change the resistor out at the same time as preventative maintenance?

Many coils have it written on them or on their box.  If yours was specific for your car and year then it should be correct.

;D   ::)  Again with the ballast resistor!  There is NO ballast resistor on that car --- Cadillac used a resistor wire instead that is connected at the through-firewall connector to the 12 gauge pink wire coming from the ignition switch.

The little "can" on the coil is a capacitor, there to help eliminate ignition noise from the radio.  If you are not getting ignition noise in the radio it is not necessary to replace it when replacing the coil or other ignition parts.  If you ARE getting ignition noise that is only one of several steps Cadillac took to eliminate the noise.

To test the capacitor in question here (to quote from the shop manual) ---
"A capacitor is mounted on the outside of the ignition coil and may be checked by running engine at medium speed and then quickly turning ignition switch to the Accessory position.  If the radio noise is eliminated, while the engine is coasting to a stop, replace faulty coil capacitor."

I might add that FM is not as susceptible to ignition noise, when doing the test above have the radio on the AM band if you have a choice, many cars still did not have FM back in those days.
