Okay, more pics

single tank master cylinder, I plan to stay mostly original, but this will go.

fuel pump looks like it's not original style.

missing a horn too

the thermostat housing is shot.  I found a NOS one for $55 online.

The wire to the AC compressor was twisted together and covered with tape.  did power the compessor and it does lock and unlock as should.

The compressor is mounted solidly with a front a rear brace.  I saw no way to move it without opening the system.  There was no pressure in the lines.

The AC system is oddly complex.  Here is a cable operated switch of some kind.

This is some line that was just loose, looks like it was for fuel?

Large carb with wiring going to it. Waiting on manual before I mess with it.

some vacuum lines are missing as well.

Compressor mounting

For an old car, it's amazing how hard the right hand bank's plugs are to get to.

pretty cool how the linkage runs inside the steering column.

some random tank hidden in the fender.

Oil filler neck and fuel pump

tag on carburetor.

The tank under the fender is the Vacuum Reservoir.

I saw this car advertized, glad it went to a good home. If most of the quarter panels are solid,I would just patch the places where rusted out . The place around the rear window is common to be rusted out, I find it best to make my own new patch panels, with new metal instead of trying to find original OLD panels.Cheaper also.Don't lesten to the nay sayers ! I do this stuff all the time. There are still a lot of parts out there. I drive a 60 Cad 4-door flat top every day, they are very good cars. Ken Perry

Zack,
Great pics - close up too.

Listen to Ken Perry, he is a very knowledgeable guy - gr8 resource.

Hey, save that carb tag - see if it actually matches the carb you have.

Have fun,

Does this SDV have a vinyl roof. From the pictures it looks like it does.

No. It has a rusted roof.

I was most worried about my father's opinion. He came in from Europe yesterday and loves the car.  Mentioned to me a few local shops still around that he used in 70's.
His first car was a 54 cadillac that he paid $100 for. I wonder what it's worth now. Lol

Yeah the quarters are solid but dented,  but this old thick metal is easier to work with.  The cancer is only by the windows and the trunk above the bumper.  It can be fixed.

This car is going to be cherry.  To me it's a cadillac made when cadillac was on top of Detroit, when Detroit was on top the world.  It's a great car that needs to be preserved.
Sure parting it would make me more upfront money.

But I WANT a four door older car.
I got the car I wanted and I can do it the way I want.

Was leather an option on my car?
I don't love my seating fabric colors, I did find repo fabric but maybe if I went to an optional covering.
Though it's not like I'm ever going to show it.
It's going to be my third car.  I plan to put miles on it. So comfort and safety are concerns.

I'm mostly focused on the engine, though I have been cleaning the seats to see what the fabric looks like.  Still has to be replaced, but interested just to try and clean them.

Steering wheel is cracked up really bad but not missing any chunks.

I'm still amazed by how complex the ac system is.

I'll play with it and some nitrogen later to see condition of connections and hoses.
I have so much 12 I'm not afraid to reuse the old hoses if they pass the pressure test with the Nitrogen.
I have an appliance repair company and when I do fridges I generally do three nitrogen fills and tests before I pump in 134or12.      I'll do same here.

Side note, I love the ride height and stance of these odd cars. Long and low.  Something not seen since 1996 in cars.
(Caprice impala)

This place has been great, I'm going to join the club too.
Love the feedback too, I'll keep posting pics.  Also if anyone in the future needs to locate a part on a 60, message me and I'll get pics.   This car seems mostly compete.

Got a long day in today. Removed a few components and cleaned them.  Found some new issues.  Looks like I need a new manifold.  In good news my fuel pump was in great shape and needs nothing.

  Here are some pictures..

Keeping flies out the carb.

cleaned up this nifty window + wiper switch

The headlight bezels have bad pitting.  The other has a crack, so they will likely be replaced.

Got the water pump, fan and housing out of the way.

The fuel pump came off next, I took it apart and put it back together.  I'll keep those pics in the next post.

the generator came out next.

wire positions

water pump pulley came off and it looks bad.  will get to it after a 48 hour soak in my solution.

started looking really bad when I looked at the back of the pump

which made me want to examine block and see this..

The belts are still stuck on the bottom pulley, will try and get that off tomorrow.

I then noticed this damage to the intake manifold.

Stored to clean later

time to remove the oil filler and fuel pump

my cheap organization method

I have to oil everything as soon as I clean it.  Rust sets on in hours here.

The Tassie Devil(le)

That pulley in a Molasses Bath will take at least a couple of weeks to start to look good.

The crack in the intake manifold is not unusual, and probably won't affect anything, unless it goes into a port.

The fuel pump was filthy on the outside, but looked new on the inside.
Took it apart and cleaned it and put it back together.

Still need to clean a little  in the corners, but I put it up in  plastic wrap when done.  My first part ready to go.

That's my mantra.
I'll take out a part then spend some time cleaning every part attached to it. Like yesterday was mostly cleaning the brackets that hold the radiator and evap.
Moving closer to first big goal of getting engine out this month and bumpers off and interior stripped.
The engine will go to a shop to be cleaned, I'll reassemble.
Trans will be done as well.
Possible drivetrain could be done this year.
Saw I had a 3:21 gear, were there bigger options?

The Tassie Devil(le)

Don't forget to remember which side of the lugs on the block that the engine mounts attached to.

The Tassie Devil(le)

Yes, you put them on the wrong side, as in front to back, and the Transmission Mount won't bolt up to the crossmember.

Haven't got to that point yet, but appreciate the advice.
Got carb off yesterday. Didn't to much today it was 98 with 90% humidity.
I have two stripped 7/16 nuts on the intake manifold and couldn't find my small removal tool.

I ordered a carb rebuild kit, but it was in good shape. Linkage moved well and no gunk or clogs, but of course I haven't taken it apart yet.
  It'll wait.

I found a 59 manual for free at cadillac.oldcarmanualproject.com it's been helpful while waiting for my paper ones to come in.
(Also tons of other free cadillac manuals) (just ad heavy)

So I have a little more confidence on removal. Having the vacuum diagram in front of me I see the ac controls were plugged, so the ac failed before they stopped driving it.

I'm almost ready to take the block off.
I was going to pull the heads first to take off weight.

Was trying to decide whether or not to pull tranny with motor, but figure it's easier now than to use the adapter on my jack later. (I have an engine stand but I rent the A frames to take motors out as I don't have the space)
So taking weight off would help, plus the heads will go to a different shop.

Need to get some steel work done before I can replace glass and need to replace glass before interior work.
So many things on the to do list.

The Tassie Devil(le)

Yes, the engine and transmission combined is a heavy lump of steel.

Zack,
Couple words of warning, don't lose the disk that is between the trans and the engine - see the pics.

Thanks for the tips.

I have to do a major house project so may have to put taking the engine out until later and do smaller things for now.
Today I spent some time just cleaning gate clamps.  Sure I could replace them, but the originals look cooler.

Got my Mason Jar / windshield washer reservoir cleaned

Fuel Pump wrapped for long term storage

reservoir tank as well

cleaning more supports.

I had no idea this thing was blue.  Still needs a little cleaning and repaint, but it too was put away for later.

tried to clean oil cap, but it's a easy item to replace.

Next step De-Carb

I am waiting for my 1959 manual to proceede, I did find a free 59 online, but I like tactile books when working on things.
Plus, I have no idea what this is, so how could I proceed?

I got the 60 book in, but half of it just refers you to the 1959 book.

The Tassie Devil(le)

Yes, there were a number of improvements in 1960, and  therefore there was the need for the Supplement.

It amazes me when I think about how much cars changed from year to year.  Every year they pushed new developments and design changes.  Now they build platforms that last years and many cars look the same.  Cars like Buick have to market themselves as "not looking like a Buick". Cadillacs look like something from Europe .

I loved reading up on the complexities of the headlight system.  I can imagine the man hours that went into replacing the use of the high-beams switch.  lol  The Cruise control is pretty complex too, but I don't have that option.
