1940 Cadillac Series 72 interior door handles and cranks.
« on: July 05, 2017, 09:03:40 PM »
I have a 1940 Cadillac Series 72 and I need Interior door handles. Can someone tell me what other handles from Cadillac will interchange that I can look for until I find the correct interior handles. Any sources for handles and the clips would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a picture of what handle you want (and escutcheons if you need them)?  I previously bought some surplus 1940 60S doors, and some have interior handles that would at least be good cores to plate.  There is a chance they could be a match for you.

They look the same as my 40 series 90.
The inserts break a lot.

I have a 1940 Series 75 4dr. convertible and the interior door handles look the same as your picture.  Yes - the inserts dry out and fall out.  I am thinking that there are ways that this could be fixed by filling in the cavity with body filler, then sanding and painting the insert the correct color, which appears to be sort of a maroon.  I have a full set, but they are not in good condition (not for sale as I need them), but am looking for replacements if any ever show up in decent condition. When having these plated the window handles will be difficult to do, as the round crank handle must somehow be removed for the chrome plating.  Sometimes when plating two such parts they no longer fit, due to the additional thickness of the plating.  I wonder if there are any reproduction handles available from any of the  GM suppliers that would fit. Some of these might not fit into the round escutcheon plate - lots of possible fitting problems/ Let us know if you find any sources of repro handles that will fit.

Hello Jack, Here are some sources for handles you can try:  Rich Baumgarten 6712 Government Farm Rd. Knoxville, TN 37920.    thehandleman@comcast.net.  I got some hard to find exterior door handles from him.  Also this guy might reproduce the plastic strip on the handles you need. He reproduces plastic knobs for prewar Cadillacs/Lasalles. Dan Whalen 2165 Berry Road, Amelia, Ohio 45102     513 734 4040.

Here is what I think is the complete interchange on these.  They are in all 39 and 40 big series cars for the handles.  They have been on eBay occasionally.  Look for anyone parting out these cars.  The escutcheon interchanges big series cars plus 60S except the plastic is gray or ivory on those cars.  The plastic will be bad anyway.  The plastic as previously noted is made by Dan Whalen.  With care the knobs can be removed for plating the handles and knobs.  The knobs were attached the same for many years so get some junk ones to practice removal on.  The escutcheons also need to be taken apart for plating and plastic replacement.  Steel on the outer part and pot metal on the inner part.  Practice to take apart on bad ones.  Similar ones were built the same.  I have some escutcheons if you need them plus plenty of practice parts.

I thought I had the answer to Jacks request because I had a box full of 75 series parts from a 39 car dismantled many years ago, but on searching it out the handles were all different than those pictured. Guess the plastic was so bad someone already replaced them in the past?

I am still working on the inserts for my 1940 Cadillac Series 75 4-door convertible.  To me the color of these inserts is a dark maroon, although they may have been painted that color at one time by a previous owner.  Color of the car is Cavern Green (very dark green).   Does anyone know the original color of the inserts?

Fred,
My 40 series 90 has black inserts,
I made a mold and fabricated my own.
