1937 coupe door hinge rust
« on: September 05, 2017, 10:17:50 PM »
Hi,
My lower hinge on each door has issues.  The driver side door lower hinge has moved forward incresing the gap by the striker.
I believe this is called the A pillar.
Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich Iannelli

Rich,
Hi. Unfortunately, the only way out of that is to cut the offending cancer out and Fabricate/Weld some new metal in to fresh metal. There's nothing left to that metal  (a.k.a. Dust).... :o

I agree, that's some serious cancer,  Behind the normal sheet metal is a much stronger pillar support metal which is about 1/8" thick supporting the hinges and the door weight making up the frame for the body.  The hinge screws attach to it and the sheet metal is spot welded to it. Cadilac called it the 'Lower front frame leg'  Looks like it's corroded very badly, probably from water getting in the windshield corners.
This support leg runs right up the sides of the windshield as well so you will not be able to replace it all, only the bottom section, but you will need the sheet metal removed first which will be a major job.
Just getting those bolts out the hinges will be challenging. Ask me how I know :o

Thanks Steve.
Looks like I'm in for a big job. I was wondering if you could tell me if a 1937 Buick special or Buick Century would have the same lower front frame leg hinge supports as the 1937 lasalle coupe.

Thanks,

They certainly do Rich, and there's a guy in MN who dismantles 37/38 Buicks and would cut you out the whole pillar if he has a coupe he's parting?

Steve,
I believe that A pillar can come from any closed body style. Your thoughts??
Thanks for the emails.

Wish I could confirm that Bob but I can't.  I do not have a MPB for sheet metal, only the Fisher body repair service manual. It shows different pictures of this pillar for the coupe but does not list any numbers. I know the vent window shape is different which indicates a different rake to the windshield pillar but at least the bottom section may well be the same?
