Hello all,

I searched pics and posts but did not any find definitve yet so.. here we go again.

1960 390 valve cover bolt winged retainers/washers, the flatter side goes toward the inside or outside of engine?

The natural feel had me putting the flat wing toward the inside of the engine

I saw the factory diagram, no help there.

Pic shows how I have then on now.

Hello Paul,

Mine are installed the other way (see pic attached) on my 429.  It seems to me that they fit the indentation of the valve cover better.  This is just my preference.  I have not seen any specification.

Hello Paul,

The diagram shows the valve cover viewed from the underside.  Views A, B, and C show the valve cover in partial cross-section to illustrate the bead in the cover that seals the cover against the gasket and cylinder head.  The illustration of the bolt and retainer - also upside-down - shows that the flatter side of the wing retainer is toward the center line of  the head, so the way your retainers are positioned agrees with the drawing.
