Is that the number on the bell housing or in front the right hand block above the waterpump?  If on the bellhousing, there are two numbers situated there. One is a production casting number. The engine number is usually very faint.

Tom Boehm

Hello Tom, What you have posted is the engine number. The 7 digit VIN number is on the same surface that you found the engine number. If you look up the VIN number in the membership directory it will tell you what year and series Cadillac or Lasalle that engine was placed in at the factory. If the VIN number on the engine matches the VIN number on the frame then it is the original engine for the car. Also If that engine is original to the car, the engine number will appear on the car's build sheet. I'm not sure the engine number has meaning to us beyond that. I hope this is the information you were looking for.

Thank you
Where do I find the directory?

It is published online on the CLC main page.  If you're a member in good standing, you should be able to create an account (if you already haven't done so) and access the directory under publications.

You will not find that number as an engine number in the directory Tom. It doesn't exist on a flathead. Clean off more crud from the bellhousing and find the correct number.
