Park lamps, turn signals operating properly on both sides - no problem. Only when applying brakes - left pair of brake lights do not come on.

Any suggestions?

It's a distant memory, but a similar problem I had on a 59 Pontiac many years ago was a maladjusted turn signal switch near the bottom of the steering column inside the car. Could be the same on a 59 Cadillac.

Well the left brake lights started working on their own. Thank you gentlemen for your input. I believe you are both correct on the turn signal switch contacts being the culprit.
