The 2009 Grand Nationals in Las Vegas will be my first Grand National event

Unfortunately will be departing Las Vegas mid morning on the June 20th, so we won't be able to attend the actual car show/judging event on the 20th.   I'm not bringing my car, but plan on attending with my husband as guests/spectators.  A few questions:

Based on my search results of previous Grand National topics here on the forum, I am picking up a concern that we may not be able to view the cars there, even though we have registered as guests of the event, and paid the registration fee - is this correct ?

If this is incorrect - since we won't be there on the 20th, any idea if there will be opportunities to view the cars attending prior to the 20th ??

Are any New England Region members attending ??

As to vendors - what types of vendors typically are present at the GN events ??

Thanking all members in advance for any input they can provide - Have a great weekend !

Lynn

Hi Lynn,

You and your husband will enjoy yourselves.Last year,I had attended my first GN.Had a blast. We were only there for the weekend, but what a great time.

This year proves a little different. This will be the first indoor GN.All of them have been outdoors,so you could view some of the cars before hand. But,maybe you can still do that at the "host"hotel.I'm guessing, the cars will be moved indoors on the day of the show.Your best bet would be,is to contact the Las Vegas region. They are the host club.

I am not from New England,I'm from New Jersey.Tried to talk the wife into going out to Vegas, but no dice(no pun intended).

As far as vendors go,its hit or miss.Last year, there were some vendors.Nothing fancy, just your basic swap meet stuff. No big names were setup.Although,I think All Cads were selling t-shirts.

Hope I was able to answer some if not all of your questions.

Regards,
Joe

Lynn, the only question I remember concerning viewing the cars (and it comes up pretty much every year) is whether or not you can view the cars when you have not registered for the GN and the answer, depending on the venue, is usually yes, but may be no this year since they will be inside.  If you have registered, you should be able to see everything every day you are there with one exception; you will probably not be able to get close to the cars being judged during the judging process.

Question: Yes or No please if possible.  Can we view the cars on Friday or Saturday or not?  I have hotel and airline reservations for the CLC in Las Vegas and based on last year's show (free attendance), never even thought about not being able to see the cars this year. I did not register my car, as it is too far to drive or transport from Ohio to Las Vegas. Your answer above said, "maybe no this year since they will be inside".  Can anyone clarify this?  If we are not registered, is there any day that we can view the cars?  Or is there any way that we (or at least CLC members) can pay a nominal charge to view the cars? Last year in Cherry Hill, even during the judging, participants and the general public were able to walk  around and view the cars freely.  Perhaps someone from the local region may be able to answer these questions.  Thanks.

I’ve been to a few GNs (list below) and during each of these events people come and go with their cars all the time during the GN.  Many people drive their car and it is their only means of transportation while at the GN.

In the past a section of the host hotel parking lot is cordoned off; stalls are assigned and only cars registered for the show are allowed to park in that lot.  But anyone can walk through the lot and see the cars, talk to the owners and anyone else there.  There are always some trailer queens that do not come out of the trailer until the show and judging.  But the majority of the cars are available on a casual basis.

I am not familiar with this hotel so I maybe wrong here.  I looked at the hotel on Google Earth and it looks like they have an under ground parking garage.  If that is what it is then it is very likely we will be able to see the cars in the same manner as in all the previous GNs.

For some pictures of past GNs look at

http://cadillaclasalleclub.org/gnphotolinks.shtml

This is a typical picture of the “show field”.  This one happens to be Orange, California in 2006 but it is very much like the majority of GNs I’ve been to.

Thanks for the very-descriptive replies - Glen and South Paw.   I will see everyone at the GN on Saturday and probably Friday, but am attending only as a CLC member, not as a participant this year. However, next year (??) I understand that the GN will be in Columbus, Ohio (only 3-4 hours from home), so I plan to register my 1939 LaSalle Convertible at that time.  We had a rough winter this year, so my car has been in storage at my son's home (heated garage).  It had to be moved to remove another car about 2 weeks ago and it started immediately, so that is a good sign.

Another good show this summer is the "Legacy of Cadillac" in Lyndhurst, Ohio (Cleveland area) on August 8th.  While nothing like the GN, this is really a great Cadillac/LaSalle event and worth attending if anyone is in the area. (Rain date is the next day).  I will be showing my 1939 LaSalle and my 1966 Cadillac at that show.

I've been to the South Point and there is no underground parking garage. There is a multilevel, covered parking structure between the casino and Eldorado Ranch Boulevard with ramps that allow you to drive up and down from level to level. It's structured so the majority of the light that gets in there is sunlight. I don't think it's gated or fenced, but I could be wrong..the casino is open 24 hours a day. Best of all, the parking in this structure is free!

Glen and Lou,very informative info from the both of you.Yea,any type of indoor show can be a pain, but rightfully so.But.the cars have to be spotless, the lighting shows off everything.I did one indoor show with my 51 Chevy, never again.

Tim,according to the hotel website, they do have an indoor "convention center".

Maybe, when it comes to Ohio,I will attend another GN.

Where are the guys from Nevada that know what they have planned?  Perhaps they could enlighten us.

Thanks Tim,  I do see the parking garage.  I wonder what the ramps that appear to go underground near the entrance are for.

That's true, and the convention center is in addition to the hotel parking garage.

Sorry, Glen, I didn't pay that close attention to that fact...the underground ramps you allude to could possibly lead to the convention center. We'll find out in a month!

If you are a registered attendee at the 2009 Grand National you may have access to the exhibition hall during the move in of the show cars.  This means that on Thursday from 2-6 PM and Friday from 7 AM to 8 PM.  Saturday attendees can enter beginning at 7 AM.

I hope that this helps answer your concerns.

Glen

Looking at the web page
http://www.lasvegasclc.org/09grand.htm
It looks like this GN will be different from the others.  The cars will move into the convention center at specified times.

There seems to be no explanation as to where the cars will be before the move in.  Will they be in one location or will they have to find parking on their own?

A lot of the questions people have are right on the GN website.

A secured parking area will be provided on the second floor of the parking garage for the day’s prior to move in on Thursday & Friday.

On Thursday & Friday, prior to move-in, show cars will be staged in a designated area on the second floor of the parking garage. Cars will be released for move-in based on their assigned times. Drivers must remain with their cars.

The ramps in front of the South Point are where the valet cars are parked.
