Hello everyone. I need to know how to disassemble the wiper stanchions so they can be sent out to be rechromed?  Once rechromed, how is the best way to put back together? Thanks guys for any responses. John Lehman... CLC # 26365...

After removing the wiper arm place a series of nuts over the shaft that are just a little too large and place the original nut back on and tighten it up and it will pull out the shaft which is on a spline through the inner gear, which will then drop out with the chain, you may have to add another nut as your tightening.
One word of warning when having these wiper towers chromed, the casting on the top is about 1mm thick and will polish through in an instant at the chromers.   I have lost many that way. They need to be told to go very carefully on the top, if they polish through they cannot be repaired as the alloy repair will fowl the gear when re fitted.

For what it's worth, when I restored my '37 Cadillac, my chrome plater (Jon Wright's Custom Chrome, Grafton, OH - http://www.customchromeplating.com/) plated my wiper stanchions (I call them transmissions) without disassembling them.  They came out beautifully.  He also did the trunk hinges without disassembling them.  Again beautiful.

I had a pair given to me decades ago chromed that way Gene but the inside had residue of all the different chemicals that were used which continued to corrode the interior for months afterwards and eventually stopped them working. I cant imagine why anyone would bother with that when it only takes a few minutes to dismantle when you know how.  The main issue remains that the roof of these transmissions are wafer thin.
