Agreed with 57EldoKing - I have never known body numbers to be out of sequence either.

Engine numbers are a different story however.

Hey guys, Im back! 53 Eldo body numbers are not in consecutive order either. A similar sequence anomaly happens with the engine unit nos. The analogy that makes sense is if you put 100 engines into a room and the last ones in were the first ones you removed. So there was a stockpile of separate bodies and engines that only came together in final vin placement. . . hence body #and unit numbers were out of sequence.

Nevertheless, the body number represents the sequence in which the body had been manufactured - regardless of when it was pulled from supply and assigned its VIN.

While the figures may be slightly off here and there, I sincerely doubt you'd find - for example - an FW #1300 EBZ whose final assembly took place in October or an FW #1000 Series 62 Coupe that had been built in July.

there is nothing anywhere that tells us that body number tags were assigned in any particular order. This is a fact

Here are a few body and vin numbers

1- 59e00010
3-59e001727
4-59e001667
5-59e008402
6-59e006661

all not in sequence
many unknown factors may have had a part in the numbering process, at the end of the day, does it even matter?

It does matter if your'e trying to understand for example how Cadillac ended up building a certain number of for example the 1959 Biarritz. At what point in time did they decide 1320 would be the final number built? If the bodies weren't built in order they would have to decide at a certain point in time that 1320 would be the final number and then proceed to fill the series. I think it's interesting to gain insight into these processes at Cadillac, and this discussion can help us do that.

the factory in 1959 did not produce Eldorado's on spec. distributor or dealer would have to order
the body tags no doubt were sequential prior to being assigned a vin, but some cars sat for quite a few days with body numbers, but no vins, and therefore were not completed in order
such would explain why 1320 was not the last car to leave the line

As to body numbers being sequential...I believe for 1959 there were at least two cars that were sequentially numbered-car 1 and 2. 59P00001 and 59P00002 were both Eldorado Broughams with matching body, VIN and engine serial numbers. As per Yann's list in the Database, car #1 was used by Cadillac's Engine Department and is not known to have survived.

Are these two Biarritz saved by CLC forum members ?
I love when cars are saved :-)
There are still so many sleeping in garage or barn around the world (even here in Belgium).
