Here we go again. I really wish I didn't have to bring this up again, but I need one.

Good used, or new-will take a reproduction.

Thanks,

Billp

One thing I consider when looking at the price of something, I think of the demand, and how much it would cost me to make the item.

Then I look to see if I can purchase something with the part in it that I could buy for a lesser price, and thereby having a lot of spare parts.

Some people haven't a clue what a part is worth, until they want to buy it.

There are lots of flat head engines lying around out there, but who wants to lug around 700 lbs. of iron to get an item you can juggle in your hand? The last time I had one of these replaced was in 1968 and the gear probably cost about $7.50. As Bruce said, it's how much Ed has invested in producing an item he may sell ten of in a year and how bad a customer needs it relative to the worth of the item.

Bill, unless you are under a time limit to obtain the gear, I would suggest you join the CLC and start making friends. Really! If nothing else, when you get your copy of our Directory, start calling some people in your state close by you that have a flat head engined car (not at supper/bedtime) and tell them your tale of woe. You might be surprised at how quickly you can find a used idler gear.

Many of our members do NOT use the Forum and you can reach a lot more people VIA the Directory than you can expressing a need on this Forum. In any case, best of luck. As Scarlett said, "Tomorrow IS another day!"

Go out and find a machine shop willing to make a few copies after YOU have the part print or math file.

You will spend 2000 before you can turn around once.

Making custom parts is very expensive and getting more so all the time, even with all the modern scanning and machining.

AllCads had the idler gear for $250.00 only a few months ago.  I spoke by phone with Ed.  He told me he only had a few left.  They are "supposed" to be the very best.  Fortunately my engine rebuilder found a NOS gear among his late father's flat head parts. I was thrilled to get original NOS. Guess it is all about supply and demand.
