Hi guys,

My fan belts are in really rough condition - time to replace. I have read few posts with issues with belt noise if not used the proper one.

Would appreciate if you can share your experience if replaced recently.

Thanks.

They should not be noisy at all if you have the correct width, taper, depth.
Go to a good auto parts store and they should be able to cross match with
a belt that's suitable from those still available.

Gates is a good brand.  According to their web site, your belts are still
available.

RockAuto is usually a good source for belts. 1968 & 69 took the same belts.

My issue even with Gates these days is they seem to be soft and stretchy.   In the old days I remember maybe having to re tension a belt maybe one time a bit after you install and use it a bit.  With what seems to be todays materials they just seem to keep stretching.   Its not too bad for a limited driver but on a daily driver its a big hassle.  I have been tightening them every oil change.

Back in the day, the a/c belt used to be sold as a "matched set", meaning they were the exact same length (for double pulley applications.  Don't see that in today's belt market.  IIRC, the Dayco number used to have an asterisk at the end of the part # and they came clipped together (the two belts) indicating they were a matched set.

I put two of the same part number, matched up the writing on the belt, the were mismatched (writing no longer lined up) in a matter of a few  minutes of the engine running.

Dayco is a good brand, I like the "top cog" belt.

A lot of matched sets are available here in industrial shops, which is where I purchase my belts.

Also available in trucking applications as well.

Mine do the exact same thing. Annoying to an obsessive sort such as myself. I get the Delco belts when possible.

The only issue with the "Top Cog" type of belt is that it would mean
a judging deduction.  With the "cuts / cogs" on the top or upper side of
the belt, it's readily apparent that it's not original equipment.  That's why
I never used them.

If that's not an issue for you, I agree they are a good belt.  As far as
"Genuine GM" belts, the lists I found only go back to 1984.  I couldn't
find those for my '73 Caddy 20 years ago.  That's why I went to Gates
and never had any problems.

Switching from Gates to Topcog is on my list (if a judge ever looks at my engine bay, I will preemptively hang my head in shame for a lot more than belts)...

With Gates, I periodically have squealing from the dual ac/ps setup.  I've been through quite a few.  Maybe the Topcog belts will be an improvement.

Don't hang your head in shame, it's your car! I like what I've had done to mine over the years. If the judges don't like well, that's their problem...

I'm going to check on my car today and will get an fresh engine pic. It's a car lover's dream and a clc judges nightmare!  ;)  8)  :P

Well Greg, I think there would be a few judging issues with the mods
you made -- unless perhaps you enter it in the modified class (?).  But
then I think you already knew that......................................LOL

My wiring skills are what are so embarrassing, but I'm slowly making baby steps.  The engine actually looks fine.
