1971 Eldorado bumper jack....

Over time i've lost the jack and parts and am having a devil of a time getting a replacement . A ebay seller list one he claims is for a 69 or 70 Eldo but  he's certain it will work on my 71.  .   My impression is it will not or will work poorly.

Would appreciate any insight on interchangeability or  where to get the real jack for my 71 convertible  (without spending too much jack as it were).   Thank you

The '71 onwards Bumper Jack is totally different.   The "hook" actually fits underneath the bottom of the bar.   I will take a picture of the actual hook tomorrow.

The picture shows the jack being used, with the soft cover used to protect the chrome.

   thank you  so much for your speedy reply and kind offer of a picture.

would appreciate the picture of the hook as well as the sliding mechanism into which the hooks rests.

  if not asking too much can you see ebay item    202139625671 .  it looks like it might work although the hook seems a bit too curved from my recollection.

I started with those bumper jacks, but they were extremely dangerous and not very effective.  When my 80 came with a compact frame jack, I realized this was a great solution.  I scouted the junk yards and found enough of them for every car.  However I also had to provide REAL spares for all cars; I have no use for that "compact" or "inflatable" junk.

G'day Bruce,

I understand your concern, but I have never had a problem with any bumper bar jack I have had to use.   I do love the hydraulic one that came with my Australian assembled 1952 Chevrolet.   Made by Lightburn, and to finish the job, simply twist the loop, and down she comes.   No constant ratcheting.

With the '71 to '74 Eldorado one has to use the Bumper Jack at the rear to gain sufficient height and clearance to remove the rear wheel.

1070 and earlier (through about 1965) used the big curved arm for both the front and rear bumpers. But in 1971 the front bumpers has a slot cut into the bottom and the main jack unit has a corresponding tang. The rear still used the big curved arm, but it was a different shape and might have fitted the jack latch mechanism differently.

Definitely need a bumper jack for the rear of my '70, gotta separate the body from the rear end to get the tire out.

I fail to see why anyone thinks a bumper jack will provide any
more wheel to body clearance, than a frame jack.  As discussed
here, the frame jack creates a problem matching up to a particular
model.  Here in the land of ice and salt, bumpers have been known
to come off, esp when stressed.  Bruce Roe

Ah ha...... that is why I live in the land of minimal ice and snow, plus whenever I have had a puncture, I am dressed up, and don't want to go grovelling under the car to position a frame jack.

PPS.   No de-icing anywhere in Australia.   Salt is for Fish 'n' Chips.

Last night I ran the snow blower, and will need to clear off the
solar panels this morning.  We deal with the stuff, helps keep
the car body shops busy. 

The 80 frame jack doesn't require going under the car at all,
just feel the place in the frame just ahead of the rear wheel
(or behind the front) and slip the jack in from the side.  It takes
a lot less elevation at that point to get the car up, than at the
extreme end, which makes it a lot more stable.  Bruce Roe

When I get a flat tyre on my Eldo, the frame in front of the back wheel is low to the ground so how does one get a jack under there?

The General must have thought about that, the nose of his jack is
only 3  3/8" high (before you start jacking).  Problem never happened
here; if the frame was that low, it would scrape on bumps.  But if
it did happen, I'd jockey the car to a spot where it was slightly lower
where the jack goes.  Alternately I'd jack at the front, put a block
under the rear frame, then move the jack to the rear (for a rear tire). 

Snow starts pretty, but after being shoved around on roads and in
parking lots, its just more dirty stuff.  We deal with it, solar nuts
have more work to do.  Areas not used to it are in serious trouble
if it comes.      Bruce Roe
