This is a scary subject,

There have been long threads concerning after market cam gears many of which have caused engine damage.  All this was hashed out long before I got involved with my LaSalle a couple years ago.  Because of the previous history I was very concerned when having my 346 overhauled last year.  The "supposedly" GOOD reproductions were "reported" to have been bought up by a certain dealer in Nevada.  I did notice that during the time my engine was being overhauled the Nevada dealer raised his prices from $200.00 to $500.00.  When I called asking about the price increase he said ....."I only have a few left and when they are gone there will be no more."

Fortunately the engine builder who did my 346 had two NOS cam gears left in his father's stash of parts going back to 1952.  So he put a NOS gear in my engine.

This is not to reflect on the quality of anyone's parts. Simply to say that there are long threads on this subject and several personal experiences dating back many years.  Best wishes to all.

This is a repeat but for new people the other part of this problem if it is a problem at all is the distributor gear that meshes with the brass gear.  This gear is the hardest of the three (cam, brass gear, distributor gear).  Every flat head I have taken apart except for a 12,000 mile one the bushings in the distributor tower have been worn bad. New clearance on these bushings is .002.  The oil passages that lube these bushings get plugged.  This results in the distributor gear becoming a cutter of the brass gear since it is the hardest and it is not being held in mesh properly due to the worn bushings.  Easy to fix even if not done when the engine was rebuilt since it can be removed with 2 bolts from the top of the engine.

Brad,
You might want to share where you get these bushings. I got my last pair from a NOS tank motor.

Too much fun is more than you can have.

They are a plain brass bushings so can easily be made by most shops doing engine rebuilding.
