I ordered a fuel filter from ebay and the end cap on the filter has a hole. Seems like it would need a closed end cap for the filter to actually work.

Does anyone have a source or part number for the correct filter? Thanks.

Jim,

Sounds like you got an air conditioning version with the return line out of the top.  I am referencing the "60 master parts list.

854464 is '41-'60 (A/C type GF-48k) non air.

Ok here is what I have.

Looks like on the top of the fuel filter housing fuel enters through the center and goes out to the carb from the side port.

The filter I have, the metal end cap is open so it would seem fuel can flow straight through the center and out the side port without being forced through the filter media.

Seems like I would need one with a solid metal end cap but that is being listed as the A/C version.

INTMD8

Actually I think it is right now that I think about it. Seems it still has to go through the filter media and go through the holes in the top part of the filter before reaching the side port.

Guess I posted this for nothing! Thanks guys :)

Yes Jim! All filter elements I have are looking identical as yours.

Something you can buy at the local NAPA or parts store.   If it doesn't fit, you can take it back.   You can get two for the cost of one and shipping.
Ebay is good for somethings, but you better know what you're buying first, P/N, etc.
Communicating clearly; Some thought you were talking about the fuel filter housing (hole on top), and you were talking about the filter element.   Filter is a general term.

MY 59

this is the one for air con, the one you have is correct for non air con

Jim,
Leaning on the side of being politically correct - authentic even, here are pics of the actual filter types.
Although I feel I may have missed something when the fluted (pleated) filters are being offered up.
Have fun,

That type was the original filter media prior to the introduction
of the folded paper type.  The GF 124 was used in 1955 for the
dual quads as I have.  That's how I recognized it.

I don't know when they changed to paper and what type was originally
used in 1959.

They are difficult to find NEW at this late date.  Some people try to
sell used ones (they claim they are new) so be advised.  They should
be in a sealed foil wrapper inside the box.

Mike,
You are right, they are hard to find, and have not researched when the paper filters came into being.
The ones I posted are however the original and correct filters for the 59 per the Master Parts Book.
My offering was intended to show "authentic....", not to say that the folded paper filters would not work, because they do.
As for the original types, they are still out there although not frequently, and they can be cleaned - not so for paper - I'm told.
Have fun,

Hi Guys
I just went through this same thing last weekend on my 59 Non A/C car. The old element in my car was the one like A/C cars have without the hole on the bottom. After I changed it to the new element I could not get the glass to seal as the new element for AC cars does not have the rubber seal for the glass jar.

How does it work without the seal for A/C cars? I ended up installing a new glass filter assembly and it has the correct non A/C car filter in it and now the glass jar does not fill all the way to the top like the old A/C filter.

Is this correct or will the car starve for fuel?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Guys,

Yes, there is a difference in after market fuel filters, with air or non air. Wix # for non air =33034.  Wix # number for air con =33039. However the rubber gasket on both types do have a sloppy fit, prone to leak. Therefore i always keep a batch of gasket rings in stock from Feltz Terrill in DeLeon, Texas. Their gasket # is 44P. The dimentions are: OD= 2.12"  ID= 1.63"  Hgt= 1/8"
These gasket rings have a perfect sealing, no leaks and alcohol fuel resistant.
Hope this helps.

The paper filters came out well after ‘59.  These cars originally had “stone” (actually sintered bronze) filters. Here are pics of the one left over from my former ‘59 Fleetwood (no a/c).

Thank You for the info, the gasket supplied with the WIX filter was a bit too small and thin. Also the A/C car WIX filter did not have a gasket.

Do the bronze ones ever fail? It seems they can be cleaned and reused.

I just went through this as well.

The image is of the Wix Filter installed. It is a tight fit but will work.

I believe the bronze ones can be cleaned and reused, but I don’t know what the recommenced prosecute is. I imagine it involves solvents and compressed air.
