58K114323

Hi all,

after 58K114323 has found her way to Europe being restored to acceptable state, I have worked up to horn ring function meanwhile. It seems that some day all of the parts running through the steering column were ripped out and dumped: the horn contact, the grommet and the ground wire as well.

I have found a 4-yrs-old thread (http://forums.cadillaclasalleclub.org/index.php?topic=124248.0) that together with the scarce pictures in the Master Parts List told me what was missing. I think I have to make these parts on my own since there seems to be no repro for them, so I might need some help if available:

- does someone have the exact sizing of the horn contact (diameter/height) and the grommet (ID/OD) available?
- where has the ground wire been attached to at its lower end? Steering gear maybe? Frame?

To me it looks like all these parts are sitting in the rotating part of the column, so I assume the parts should not be manufactured to snug fit, right? Think they would always twist the wire when rotating the wheel.

Thanks for sharing ideas - good to have a knowledgeable community like yours :-)
Greetings from Europe

Josef,

Correct the plastic/composite insulator fit inside the steering column with a slight clearance and as do the brass contact inside it. The spring inside the horn ring applies pressure so there is no rotation of either the insulator and/or contact that could twist the wire, the spring rides around the collar on the brass contact.

Unfortunately I closed mine over the weekend so I would not be able to provide the brass tip dimensions.  :(  Maybe someone can chime in.

The wire goes inside the steering column and exits about 1/3 length where the NSS (neutral safety switch) is mounted, there is a brass ring which is mounted on the steering column for the NSS horn contact to ride.

If you do a search on the forum for 1956/1958 horn you will find several post related to this topic.

Hope this helps..!

Good luck..!

Jay, thanks a lot. Think that will help for a first go. Sizings would have been perfect, but I'll try on my own then. Certainly more questions to come on those particular technical solutions Caddys & other cars had at that time... ;) Won't surrender  ;D.

WOW! True! It was not listed in the online shop, and the part is available for '57 and '59 only - the '57 part was the same, right? Don't have my MPL available today.
