1940 60S front fender question
« on: December 07, 2017, 04:52:54 PM »
Are the sidemount fenders on a 39/40 60 special wider at the rear than the non-sidemount ones? I noticed that if you eyeball along the side of the rear fenders, up to the fronts, my fronts with sidemounts stick out at the rear. In other words, the fr/rear fenders are not on the same plane. I'm asking because I want to do away with the sidemounts and english wheel a patch panel. Can't find any normal fenders, so gotta modify. Thanks, John Walker 206 789 6800 Seattle

I can't be certain, but I will offer a "common sense" answer. Since "most" owners would never bother to check out whether the front and rear fenders were in line with one another, and the cost of adding an inch (or whatever) to the die to stamp two different fenders would have added an un-needed expense, I would say "probably not."

John,

If you want to drive up and measure my 40-60S that would work.  If the weather is nice and I have a reason to be in Seattle I might be willing to drive to the your shop.

Gíday John. Is it possible that you have non Sixty Special fenders. The other series cars are narrower in the cowl and the fenders wider by the amount you say yours are out.
Ps I havenít forgotten you sending me the winder. Can you believe Iím still stuck in divorce limbo? Nearly 3 years and I havenít touched my cars. Ugggghhhh.

Ps, can you all keep an eye out for a decent rear window frame. An idiot broke my one removing it. I bought a replacement which got broken in transit.

J. Walker: I have a 3961 CCP that was NOT an original sidemounted car. During resto in 1971, the fenders were cut, & wells & covers were welded in from a donor car. The modern Replacement tires (correct size bias) do not fit in wells. Cowl air vent is different, also. Contact Terry Wenger, in St Louis, for more detail.   C Chleboun # 20099

John:

Yes, the sidemount fenders on the'39 and '40 Sixty-Specials are wider in the rear, as you have seen from the front. They won't accept wells from a sidemounted car 60S.

The '39 -61 however that I converted by installing wells that was mentioned above had the wide fenders, whether sidemounted or not. Incidently those wells that I put in those '39-61 fenders were from a '40 60S.

So are the sidemount fenders just the same fender for all series or was the sidemount fender a unique item for the Sixty Special?
Just for interest sake. My friendís 34 Aerodynamic Coupe had the fenderwells filled in and leaded by the factory. The well bases were crudely torch cut off.
