Title: 1961 fabric spare tire cover
Post by: D.Smith on February 29, 2016, 08:47:06 AM
These were standard on the Fleetwood and Eldorados, a $7 option on these rest.

Why can't I find any for sale?  LOL

It is made of the same tweed looking fabric that the trunk is trimmed in so newer, more modern ones don't look right.

Anybody have a source for one?

SMS sells the trunk lining fabric; get the fabric & have an upholstery shop make one up for you.

I spoke with SMS and they do sell the material for $75 a yard.   They said it will take 1.5 yards to make.  But they won't make one without one to duplicate.

So I am back to looking for one.

Hello Dave

Glad to read you are improving your Cadillac.  Have you considered contacting a CLC member with a similar model that lives near SMS to take their cover in for a measurement?

I have several of the "gray" ones if you can give me the measurements. Prefer E-mail rather than PM.

I have an original spare tire cover. Its in tattered condition, but usable for a pattern.

I too am looking for one of the grey tweed fabric spare tire covers for my 1966 model (have a bias ply Firestone tire, not a radial).

Barry, if you still have a decent one you would sell, please contact me.

Thanks,

Maybe try this in the 15F GM waffle:

I have one coming for my '61 but I won't see it for a few months as its being sent as part of a larger shipment.

For the price I figured is worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion - I have contacted ProFit for a sample of their fabric.  Hopefully it will offer a viable alternative to SMS' trunk lining fabric @ $75/yard.  My sister-in-law is willing to sew the cover.

The 61 trunk material is very unusual.   Grey tweed with gold metallic threads, red, blue and green threads as well.

The reproduction trunk kit I saw was just grey tweed with blue threads only.

That's interesting.  My 1971 Cadillac parts book shows only one part number for the trunk lining, and for the spare tire cover as well, covering all years 1961 through 1966.  Could reflect a later consolidation.

Here is a picture of an original 1966 trunk and the tire cover, along with a picture of the tweed fabric currently being offered by SMS.  Still waiting for ProFit Auto to send me a sample before I move forward.
