Title: 1938 Fleetwood 60 Special
Post by: Dr. John T. Welch on June 01, 2017, 10:45:57 PM
Dry southwest Arizona desert car with sound body, wood, metal and trim.   Very presentable paint and chrome. The car runs and is yard driveable for loading. It  is being sold as a project because modifications to the electrical system and powertrain require sorting and completion.  Please call or text with questions and requests for pictures.

Perhaps a little more background might spur interest in this car.  This was a lovely, dry, original, southwest '38 Sixty Special that underwent major cosmetic restoration in the early-mid  70s and was lightly used thereafter.  Present elderly CLC member acquired it about 15 years ago and decided to modify it for suitable use as a daily driver for himself and wife. An unfortunate and expensive series of events followed during which the car passed among the efforts of several people contracted to transform it, none of whom conformed to a consistent plan for execution.  The original engine and transmission were removed and  a generic GM 350 crate engine and 700R4 automatic overdrive transmission were installed, and a custom  drive shaft was fabricated linking to the original differential.  The steering was converted to use a contemporary Saginaw 605 power assist  gear and a GM tilt column.   The electrical system was converted to 12V and a GM "G" series van instrument cluster was installed in place of the original dash instruments. A custom aluminized exhaust system was nicely fitted  and so was a  vacuum assisted GM power brake unit. That's where things stopped in their tracks about six years ago. At present the car moves under its own power and can be yard driven for  loading.

This project has  potential for completion  as a conservative resto-mod fun driver after final sorting of  mechanical and electrical details in the wake of work already accomplished.  An appropriate new "Painless" wiring harness is provided with the car.  A CCCA oriented individual could reverse the changes already made and restore originality.  The original flathead V-8 and  manual transmission are still available. The car is amazingly well preserved structurally, and the chrome is outstanding.

If you are a project oriented individual, this is an opportunity for you.
