Hi Guys,

I am chasing a pinion seal housing. I have the seal but can not find the housing. Have been told the same part fits a 50 Caddy.

Any assistance is most welcome.

Ray,

The pinion seal, cup type is the same 1938 to 1952:

Group 2.0684   Oil Seal, W/Retainer Pinion Bearing
1938-1952        For use with differentials having cup type plug in yoke end of carrier.
Part #               363 0051

These rascals are extremely hard to find. When one want to replace the seal they remove the cup housing with the seal, press the old seal out and insert a new one (there is more to it than that, but that is the high lever explanation).

I have a new cup seal, for my 38 65 Series Cadillac, so can send a picture if it might help.

Good Luck

Hi.
Something you might consider.  I changed out my entire rare axel assembly with a '53 Oldsmobile.  It's almost an exact replacement.  Keep the same drive haft and parking brake cables.  Only the spring perches were changed.  It changes your reaar end ratio from a 3.92 to 3.42..Now you can play in the fast lane with the big boys.  I did this to my '40  6267.  Jim Schrimpf.  #2469  jm_schrimpf@fuse.net

Ray,
Four or five years ago when I replaced the seal on my 38 LaSalle I called Coopers for a replacement.  They told me I had two options, one was to use the standard seal for use with the stamped steel retainer/spacer or a replacement seal which did not require the old seal retainer.  The replacement seal was more money and since I already had the retainer I purchased the standard seal.  The replacement seal would be an option for you, if it exists.  If Coopers is still in business you could call them and they would know what you need.

Hello Ray,

I've had the same problems as you with the pinion seal. I found some seal #'s for X reference
The # stamped in the original seal is National 30283

Other manufacturers and their #'s are: McCord:84176
                                                               Victor: 49234
                                                               CR: 18677
The CR # is replaced by National 473179 witch is my best bed because it's still listed in their catalog.

Hope this helps.
Sincerely,

Yep,

That is the seal to use:

National Oil Seal 473179
1.7/8” shaft size (1.875”) by 2 ¾” OD (2.758
Use the old cup pinion housing, press out old seal and press this one in.
