My 1961 Cadillac transmission is leaking from (I Think) the O ring that goes around the gear select on the tranny body. I never worked on a transmission. It only leaks when sitting, not driving.
Has anyone here had this issue and can tell me what to do ?
Besides that the tranny shifts great.
Thanks

The shifter shaft and TV linkage need to be removed and have new O rings installed.  Call around to see who works on Hydra-Matics. Its not surgery, but a few precise measurements need to be made.

i did it on mine. get a service manual as it explains how. you can do it without removing transmission. You need to drop pan, disconnect linkage, etc. 90% common sense job. Get an o ring kit at parts store and you will find what you need.

Hello,

I have the same problem over here in Germany. Can anyone give the exact measures of the O-rings needed? Thickness and Diameter. I'll have to order them upfront.

Thanks in advance,

I ended up bringing it into a tranny shopmthat specializes in classic cars. My split converter was leaking, the reverse gear was stripped and the band's inside tranny were hard as a rock. Got everything replaced. Guy said it will bang a little from R to D till it sets.
Tranny great now with no mire leaks.

Axel, you can order just that kit here: http://www.autotran.us/ It comes with 2 O-rings, a washer and the small pin.

Check the removed shaft for rust.  The problem here has been the shaft rusts
from the outside, then the rust destroys the seal.  good luck, Bruce Roe

Changed the seals last weekend. Also the O-ring on the tube to the pump. All were rock solid. I disassembled all valve bodies and cleaned everything. Still have a slow shift between 1 and 2 and a hard shift between 2 and 3. I had a whine from the rear planetary gears, but this is now reduced after a 60 mile trip on the Autobahn at 60mph. I probably have to work on the adjustment of the TV rod to get all the shifting becoming smooth like the 3 to 4 shift. I need to install a rev counter to better tackle this task.
