Plan to install my existing bronze gear into another 346 block, and want to be sure that it is OK.
Where should I look to determine if it is operational ?

You will see the amount of wear in the centre of the teeth surface. I don't know if there's a more technical way? I have always used judgement.

Steve is correct on the location of any wear and again it is judgement. The pictures below are from a 47 engine which the speedometer said 43000 which could also have turned over and been 143000. I see no wear in the teeth so my judgement is the gear could go back in an engine.  Bill

Many tanks for te photos.

Next step will be to put the gear on the bench for a close visual inspection.
