Hello,

I am not trying to be a pain with all the questions. I do search the forums 1st before asking. I have a couple more questions.

1st. see the pictures below it appears I am missing a heater box inlet on drivers side am I not?

2nd. The autorionc eye isn't working I hear a buzz which I am told is normal. I do not have any bright lights when I cover the eye or press the dimmer switch which is my question there are to buttons on the floor side by side 1 bigger than the other which is the dimmer?
Where should I begin the diagnostic?

thanks
Thanks in advance C. Sams

I'm away from my main PC so I have to wing it from memory.  :(

There are a few posts related to the Autronic eye these are the same for the '55-'57 and if I recall correctly there maybe additional details also on them.

If you hear the amplifier pulsating as Walter mention the noise is from the vibrator inside the amplifier. The unit work with the eye at the dash. On the '55 there should be two floor foot switches one that operates the low/high beam and the second to enable/disable the Autronic function when it is on (high beam on).

There is a power relay next to the amplifier witch operates by the foot switch and/or the amplifier to switch low/high and high/low. If you can't get the high beams to come on it maybe a faulty power relay.

If do a search by Autronic you maybe able to find more details.

Good luck..!

The heater box is indeed missing due to the Master Cylinder booster combination which isn't original to the car, can't help with the Autronic Eye .

Please download the Shop Manual here:

Disconnect the battery! The instrument cluster is held by 3 screws. One in the top center, 2 on the lower sides. You have to take off the speedometer cable first from the back. But as far as I remember you should let the steering column come down a bit. Therefore you remove the bolts on the floor and loosen the bolts on the bracket. Then you can pull the cluster a bit, so that you can unbolt the heater/fan levers on both sides. You should also pull all the instrument lights and other connectors before you pull out the cluster. These cables are not very long, so you won't want to brake one. Oh and not to forget the wiper control cable. Here I can't remember how it is done. You need to look that up in the manual.

They had power brakes but were not mounted on the firewall.  Someone has modified that car and taken part of the heater system out to put a "modern" power brake booster in it.  You REALLY should have a shop manual for that car --- easy enough to find on eBay Motors or follow Axel's suggestion.

Actually, you need the '54 shop manual AND the '55 supplement.  Here is one that claims to have both years together ---

Check all your connections on the Autronic eye, remove and clean each one. The system is sensitive to good clean connections.

I believe the 55 has 2 heater cores? You could just make the right one functional? With global warming you should be ok!

They probably removed the box as it may have been rusted...but also seeking a substantial mounting for the master cylinder booster that was added.

I just got a manual for mine. It was $39 I think. I am posting a picture of the booster. It is up front forward of the powee steering pump.

Don't do feel bad about asking ?'s. That is what this forum is for. I have had our 55 exactly a week and I plan to post a few stupid questions tonite or tomorrow.
However, you need the manual---this isn't a Honda.
Jeff

Sorry, rotate the picture 90 degrees clockwise. Is don't know how to do that.
