Searching for name of part 68 SDV
« on: June 18, 2017, 06:31:47 PM »
I am wondering what the proper name is for the fiberglass? plastic? panel on SDV which covers/protects the REAR door hinges. It is visible when the FRONT doors open on the pillar. WHile my SDV is damn near original perfect condition, the one on drivers side has been cracked. Need to know what I am looking for. THanks for help from all the pros.

Glen, the picture is for the sheetmetal parts, welded to the body. That plastic shield is not mentioned here.

“Dust Shield” is the common or garage name. The MPL show them as “Molding, Outer, Body Center Pillar Group 12.113”. I should have known this because I searched for three years  looking for a set for my ’66 Brougham. There were none to be had so I made a set of two from five broken ones that cost little more than shipping postage. The ’68 part numbers are:

Brougham, 60 Special & SDV (pillar) : 7694352 RH; 7694353 LH
SDV HT:  7694394 RH; 7694395 LH

I don’t know what the difference is between the HT and pillar sedan parts.

If you’re adventurous and handy, buy a some broken ones until you get enough good sections to make a good one. Mark off the good sections of each like a puzzle and make clean straight cuts. Bond those sections to .03-.06” thick brass sheet on the back side using 3M flexible adhesive. It’s a standard material for repairing flexible bumpers. Clean up the joints and fill them with 3M flexible filler. Sand and paint. Mine were on my car for 5 years and  when I sold it there were no cracks or flaws and they still looked factory original.

THanks so much to all. Especially Messina. I have repaired 'glass before and believe I will give this one a shot. It is all there, just cracked from outer exposed edge to within about 2 inches of mounting surface. As my searches have turned up no replacements, rest assured I will take every single one I ever come across.
Thanks again to all.
