I'm having my 56 hydramatic rebuilt by a specialist and I was talking with him today.  I asked him what fluid should I use.  He told me Dexron III and that it's still available.

I told him how I've run Dexron VI in my 50 hydramatic for a couple years without issue and that I used it because I read a GM service bulletin online which states the Dexron VI is reverse compatible with all previous generation Dexron fluids and is safe to use.

He respectfully and entirely disagreed.  He said the VI is too slippery and that III is what needs to be used.  So in the future that is what I'll use and what I'd advise others to use as well.  This guy really truly knows his stuff.  He's a third generation transmission guy, and I was introduced to him by the guy I bought my caddy from.  He told me he's had dozens of transmissions done by him over the last 20 years and never had one come back, ever.

Just wanted to share this with everyone.

Great. I always suspected it as well. There is a reason why they still produce Dexron IID (the predecessor of Dexron III). Another advantage is that III is cheaper than VI.  :)

That is what my shop said too.  Basically only use 6 in stuff that originally came with it.

So if I want to replace a leaky pan gasket on my 62,000 mile car with a perfectly operating transmission I would need to drain the torus cover too and put in Dexron III?  I have no idea how old the fluid is.  Or do I drain the pan into a container and reuse?
Thoughts?
Thanks, Larry

Larry,

I would strongly suggest you drained as much ATF as you can including the torus if the ATF looks nasty and since you do not know how old the fluid is, I know it is a pain to get the torus cover off->  >:(

If the ATF look decent you can bypass the torus and just refill it with fresh ATF, DO NOT reuse the old.

Good luck..!

Cheap insurance to use fresh fluid, Larry. ;)

Thanks.  I will do this.
I just finished getting the interior assembly and cleaned the top yesterday.  Last week I hand rubbed with rubbing compound then waxed this beast.  A BIG car!
As soon as I get the filter/drier installed she goes on the road.  Can't wait.

I came across this while I was sorting out my Cadillac Serviceman.  I figure I would just add this to the discussion.   It is interesting that the newer Dexron II D was formulated to reduce corrosion in the transmission cooler.  Dexron II C and B are not to be used in cars with a tubular transmission cooler.
