are the window glass etchings on the inside or the outside?? Help

I am making up stencils to do glass logo etching.  Was it originally on the inside or the outside of the window?  I believe that it is read from the outside.

Some were on the inside and some on the outside , they etched the glass on only one side is what I was told. On my 1940 the original glass was like that and I duplicated it on my new glass.
