'93 Allante Has a New Home
« on: March 07, 2012, 11:24:13 AM »
Well here she is. We've put a few miles on her and the "chirp" I mentioned in a prior post comes and goes. It's getting less with more exercise but I'm changing out the idler pulley anyway. The wheels are not original to Allante. They are 17's I was told from a STS, not sure of the year.

A nice looking ride!  Driving it is the best thing you can do for it, in terms of care.

It is more than quite common for Allante owners to change the factory wheels.  It is one of the few ways they can personalize their ride, so it gets done alot.

Me, on my '92 I took swapped out the custom wheels that were on it for the OEM variety!

Nice.  I like the wheels.  You get bonus points for them being Cadillac wheels.  My wife would be jealous, she loves Allantes.

Thank-you Dave & Gene for the nice comments. Basically this is my wife's car, she'll be driving it more than me. She had 3 criteria, fuel injection, a 2 seater, and better brakes than our '57.

I hope for her that she can open or close the roof without problem!

Roger, So far no problems with the roof. You definitely have to be very methodical when doing that. That point was expressed by every one selling their Allante. They all said that for $60,000 Cadillac should have been able to find a way to operate the roof from the drivers seat. In fact 2 of the cars we looked at were being sold for that reason alone.

Cadillac should have insisted that the Pininfarina design included a full power top.

Trophy wives with long fingernails did not have a lot of fun with the top when these things were new.  The pre-90.5's were even worse.  Break one nail... trade it in for a Benz.

I attached a photo of the OEM chrome 16" 1993 wheels.  They are very similar to the 94 optional DeVille chrome wheels, but not exactly the same.  Note the little points on the raised chrome areas.

Enjoy it, it looks great!

Paul, I was a GM Service District manager for US cars years ago. One of my first duties was to attend the Geneva Show; it was 1989 if I remember well. One Allante was exhibited and the Service manager from the Geneva dealer and me tried to open & close the roof. What a chore!
During the show, people from Mercedes had a look at the Allante; I don't remember if they played with the roof but I shamed me to have to show such a miserable achievement.
This continued till 1993; there were some improvements at the roof but it was still miserable.
I was glad the The Allante was gone for the 1994 show...

TJ

Here's the instructions for lowering the roof. You have to be out of the car standing by the driver's door. It is basically manual with the exception of the latches.
